    Default UMD Build Help

I am looking into creating a new character that is good at fighting but has a high UMD so he can use most items, but I am at a loss as to where to start.

    Any help would be useful.

Do you want a pure or multiclass build?
Do you have a race preference?
Do you have access to drow?

Do you want to be a bard or a rogue? If so, it should be fairly easy to do what you want.

If you don't want to be a bard or a rogue, are you willing to at least take 2 levels of rogue? You'll have to plan carefully, but this has been done successfully a lot.

Here is one idea (one of my alts). More of an all-purpose combat rogue than a fighter with good UMD:

    Drow, rogue X, paladin 2, fighter 2

    Starting stats:

    STR 12
    DEX 17
    CON 10
    INT 14
    WIS 10
    CHA 16

feats: weapon finesse, skill focus: UMD, toughness, whatever else you like.

What can this build do: most of what you expect from a rogue with better saves and some more combat options. Good UMD.

Problems with this build: low CON and STR for melee. Moderate INT/DEX for drow rogue.

I do have access to Drow and don't have an issue with it being multi class. I am more looking at a combat roll, would 2 rogue / 2 pally / rest fighter work for this? If so, I think I would switch out DEX for STR

I have a 2 rog/2pally/12 fighter build and really like it. There are some other good combinations that make umd possible on fighters as well.

drow 2 rogue/2 paladin/x fighter should work great.

You just need to make sure you take your first and one of your last levels as rogue (to get good skill point distribution) and that you have enough INT to keep up your ranks in UMD and whatever other skills (jump, intimidate, etc.) you like.

I'm not sure what would work best for starting stats, but I'd probably want at least 14 CHA, 16 STR, 12 INT, and 12 CON. I'd use one of the character planners to work it out and make sure I was happy with it, but I know a lot of people have done these types of characters successfully.

This is what I came up with, going to try tonight as see how it goes, I tried with 3 levels of Pally, to pick up the immunities and did not notice any difference in the overall total except one higher for Reflex and Will saves.

    A few comments:

    Overall looks pretty good.

Starting stats look OK to me, but I'm not the best judge of melee classes.

You do not need to use a feat for Tower Shield. You get that for free with your fighter levels.

You have put some skill points into disable device, search, and open lock, but not really enough to be useful to you. I don't think you should worry about those with this type of build. Use the points for something a fighter needs instead (balance, jump, spot, intimidate, etc.). If you really do want to have one of the rogue skills, I'd say go for open lock. It's probably the easiest one to get a decent score in and with good equipment and buffs you can probably get a locked chest or two open when there is no rogue in a the party.

BTW, I know I said "2 rogue levels" but it looks like you can max out the UMD without that second rogue level. You have it planned for 16, so plenty of time to think it over, but you might not need it.

l2 Rogue is pretty useless with a 10Dex wearingheavy armor.

Drop The second rogue level, Swap Tower Sheild Proficency for Skill Focus UMD, and pick up Paly 3 in place of Rogue 2. Tis will give you the full array of paladin immunities.

I would probobly drop Wisdom down to 10 and tick Con up one.....
