Default Crafting Knowledge NOT a game dynamic

I realize that the crafting that we currently have is more than likely a precursor to crafting that may or may not come later.
When I first heard that we were getting crafting I was anxious to get to work and create some items. The actual crafting knowledge though is totally kept outisde of the game.
I like the concept of tiered ingredients. Combine tier 1's to get tier 2. Then combine tier 2 to get an item. etc. etc. etc.
It just seems a little ridiculous that we don't have character recipe/crafting books. My character combined items. But beyond that, the character doesn't know what he combined to get that item?! I combined items that created NOTHING but a waste of an energy cell, but the character doesn't know it.
"Oh, " comes the reply, "Just check the forums or a certain website for a list of recipes."
I just hope that if and when actual item crafting becomes available that I won't have to constantly search outside of the game for recipes that my character has already created/failed.

Those two statements kinda conflict with eachother: why not wait and see what crafting is going to be like when it comes out...this is RAID LOOT CRAFTING...and it is supposed to be more "interesting"...

There is a very good chance that there will be books with recipes dropping in chests and such once the real crafting is out!
    Done.

Perhaps put a single note on the alter at the end of the raid - include an item description and recipe. Make the drop rate something like:

    49% Greensteel
    24% Invasion
    14% Subjugation
    9% Devestation (No bonus)
    1% Devestation (Pure)
    1% Devestation (Aspect)

Extra cool: add the recipe to each players crafting book.

It doesn't matter whether this is "raid loot" crafting, or "crafting" crafting, things that characters discover should be available to characters. Right now, the only way to craft is for the player, not the character, to go outside the game to a forum or other website to find out known formulas and failures.

This is such an easy thing to implement, too, just like our quest journal/favor journal.

This would be very fun. I could see whole quests around finding some ancient, lost formula. To keep things interesting it would be neat if random formulas show up as an item in the end chest.

I can think of tons of stories that could be used as back stories for find the recipe quests.

I am trying to remember how crafting worked when EQ first came out, I don't believe things were spoon fed to you there either, but it has been years and I could be mistaken.

Personally I like the sense of discovery and newness.

Heck, even just adding notepad in-game would hold me over.

But the funny thing is, even if Turbine gives you an In-Game place to note your formulas... you will still consult the out-of-game document for a much bigger and more complete list

Is there such a big difference between getting the information in-game or on a website? I'm enclined to believe that a good website will probably have a better presentation than the in-game interface Turbine would come up with. If it's just "find a note with a recipe in a chest", then you'll still be using websites, not going through hundreds of notes in a bag...

If I wanted to be hardcore about it.
It could be like the wizard spell book, where there might be a recipe vendor for the common & uncommon recipes and only get the rare item recipes from chests/quests. With recipes sprinkled throughtout the quests/levels we would have to revisit quests that we only run for favor.

Perhaps a common "library" of sorts. doesn't have to be an actual building, could be an NPC that you show your crafted items to and he/she records what went into them and then is available to give that info to other players? I dunno how that would work, just thinking out loud. I haven't even crafted yet. But I'm Crafty!!!!

In LOTRO you have to buy or find a recipe before you can make them. The common and uncommon can be bought but the rare ones you have to find on mobs. there are also rare single use recipes that become really useful if you can make a critical version 5%+/- chance to make. That makes it extremly difficult to make these rare critical items (hard to find plus 5% chance after you do find it). In DDO's current crafting you might have to go outside the game to decide what you want to make and it will take a long time to get what you need but atleast you can always make what you want.
