    Default Examine other players

With a lot of items becoming bound nowadays it's hard to show off your hard earned kit except via screenshots which can be a pain.

THerefore, it would be nice if you could click on another player and examine them - i.e. see what items they have equipped and what they are wearing in all their slots.

For privacy sake, perhaps make it so you can disable this if you don't want people peeking at your items.

Anyway - I think that would be cool.

    Cheers,

    Garth

This comes up in MMOs all the time. I personally have no problem with it if we do indeed get an option to toggle off the ability to be examined.

I don't want people looking at my Gear.

This has been brought up before and shot down and doubt anything has changed since then.

You want to know what someone is wearing or using, ask them.

See the screenshot that Dane had up recently of the Giant in his 'undies' in Meridia?

    Sorry you asked?

In response to the OP, there are several prejudices out there already. Many "insufficiencies" can be hidden by a good player, especially with the right item. If I were in that position (since I do have unconventional builds), I wouldn't want someone to say "You can't join my party because you don't have x,y,z item that I declare necessary for your class" I know it sounds harsh, but believe me, it would happen.

EQ2 has this, I'm not sure about other MMO's. I thought it was a good idea. A toggle on / off option would be a must. Peace!

Quite a few negative reactions here, but I did suggest making it an option you could turn on/off...?

I'll even go one step futher and suggest that it's off by default

Also - you could even have three options: on (allow, never ask), off (deny, never ask), ask (always ask) - asking would be popping up a box 'player X wants to examine you - allow yes/no?' - this wouldn't even appear if you set 'off', and would default to 'off' in pvp arena or dungeons/raids...

Another solution to the underlying problem might be to allow bound items to be put in the trade window but the trade to fail if you actually tried to trade it - then at least I'd be able to look at other people's crafted items and drool... I think it used to be like this a long time ago but was maybe changed due to a 'problem'.

I think the biggest annoyance would be the "you don't have X gear so you can't join" people and the worst of all:

"OOOH! YOU'VE GOT A 'Y' ITEM! WHAT DO YOU WANT FOR IT?!?"

    Constantly.

    From the same person.

    On multiple alts.

Begging and begging and begging for an item.

It'd be OK I guess, but it's not really something I'd want to see them put too much Dev time towards.

Never liked this feature in a game and be assured I wouldnt use it on other players and disable its use on me if it were possible, sure would hate to see any dev time wasted on this. One of the reasons I dont like this people look at someone and if the items arent bound they beg for them or try to buy them. If they are bound they start bugging you with how you got them.

Another way you could get around this "problem" is to do similar to other mmo's where you can be typing to a friend/party or whatever and ctrl-click an item to have a link displayed in the chat window

You can then hover/click on this to show the item details.

This could be a nice workaround instead of having to add a whole extra interface for examine.

We have something like that right now, but only when a player loots something.

    That's more then enough.

The off by default might be ok but the ask thingy is right out the window and I dont care if bound items cant be seen, dont want to waste my time showing stuff off in a trade window, I dont get enough time to play to waste any looking at or showing things off in a tarde window. If no dev time would be wasted in a off by default thing like this fine otherwise but me down as a huge NO

aye, had a level 6 human cleric, and he was wearing +5 Fullplate, RR human. Throughout a pug, this guy kept trying to convince me to sell him my armor, dispite my obvious lack of interest in a trade. Finally, i had to squelch him he was so crass about it.

While I am not fussed either way, it can be nice to examine other people and see what they have to see if you have anything better you could give them. "Hey I see your only wearing +4 full plate, try this +5 on instead".

But realistically most people won't use it like that, and we seem to manage just fine by asking friends over chat what they are wearing.

Personally I don't like the idea, the situations where exclusion based upon gear (anyone remember CO6 groups requiring tanks to have wounders for elite runs when the level cap was 10? I do), and possible griefing (the persistant prospective buyer scenario) are enough reason to warrant this not be put in place in my opinion. If someone absolutely feels the burning desire to show off a piece of gear a screenshot, while not as simple, will suffice.

This gives me an idea for a fun bio:

This shouldn't be allowed. There is no reason for it and there are lots of problems with it.

As someone else said if you think its so important for phallic enlargement purposes to be able to show off bound items then let them go in the trade window but stop the trade from being completable if there is a bound item present.

    Default Great idea.

I think most of the people who didn't like this idea missed the part about us being able to toggle it on and off. If you don't like it, leave it off, however, there are a ton of people who would like it. Since you would completely control who could see what, there is no need for a difference of opinion here since the suggested idea be that its controllable by the individual.

DDO could really benefit from this. I for one would like being able to show my 'gear build' instead of having to type or or chat it every time someone asks. And since you could turn the feature off, there is no reason for people to fear shady traders or spammers.

    Squelch ftw anyways.
