It works only on the Third Level Spell Lightning Bolt.

Which is what it is called 'Lightning Bolt Ward' not 'Chain Lightning Ward' or 'Ball Lightning Ward'. If you are given something specific as 'protects against lightning bolt spells'... it can't be taken many other ways

Well yes, in the sense that they both do electricity damage and Chain Lightning is a more powerful spell.

But no, in the sense of "chain lightning is just a higher level lightning bolt." If something "blocks Lightning Bolt" it's not going to block Chain Lightning, Ball Lightning, Shocking Grasp or any other spell just because it deals electricity damage. They're separate, individual spells.

well technically he is right, chain lightning is just a more powerful version of lightning bolt. in one of the optional books you can get the "chain" spell feat, which turns any ray/line spell into a chain spell (for the cost of +3 levels)

so Id say the insultating armor should stop chain and normal lightning bolt spells, cause both are a line/ray spell that goes from one point to you, no to shocking grasp and ball lightning cause those are personal/area affects

In that case it would stop a Lightning Bolt spell cast with the 'chain spell' feat. Chain Lightning is still a different spell. If it said, "Stops all Lightning spells," then it would work on any spell with 'Lightning' in the title.
