As it's currently implemented, the Auction House only has one variable on the search function that limits the levels of the items displayed. The theory is that if you're looking for a particular item, you can eliminate items that do not fall in that level range to make the list shorter so that you can find your specific item easier.
I have a few problems with this that range from not necessarily knowing what level item I need, to the thought that other types of variables could be more useful. Let's say I need a +3 con item at lvl 14. Since I can use any level item at 14, then I can really only eliminate those items that fall below the +3 stat requirement, and I honestly couldn't tell you what that was, so I have to search through the entire list.
I also think that there's a better way to search for items. Every item has the possibility for a +modifier, a prefix, a base item type, base item type material, and a suffix. Outside of that, it's either a named item or a bugged item. I personally think that being able to search for a dex item or an intel item, transmuting or holy, pure good or true chaos, etc. would be much much easier. Now there could be either a dropdown for each variable, or there could be a tree style progression on the left hand side that continues the Jewelry -> Bracers that that exists currently into Jewelry->Bracers->Dexterity or Greatsword->Holy->Pure Good would simply be more useful.I personally would like to be able to see items that had just been added to AH say last 8-12 hour posts...so I dont have to look at everything over and over and over
So I just want to know if anybody actually uses the level variable on the AH as it currently exists in game, or if there are better suggestions as to how something like this could be implemented.
