    Default Inventory System Suckage (ISS)

    Hello Stormreach!

I just wanted to voice this officially here in these forums... My peers over at the Order of the Silver Dragons, are tired of hearing this from me but most don't disagree.

What's with the Inventory System Suckage (ISS)?!?!

I had a chance to peak at a multitude of Inventory systems for various MMO's including LOTRO... There are some VERY simple things there that should absolutely be available in this little game of ours (DDO). If it takes you longer than a few seconds to find an item, the system doesn't work well.

    Souk: I'm blind, I'm blind, I'm blind!! I can't see.... *runs into a wall*
Yndrofian: Souk, stand still and use a remove blindness pot!!
Souk: When I ran out they came off my hotbar... I'm trying to find them in my inventory!

    Moments Later:

    Vra: Good run guys!
Souk: Ahhhh found em *gulps down a potion*
    Souk: *looks around*
    Souk: Guys?!?!

So, with that said... I'll list my thoughts here:

    • When in the "SELLING" tab, it's nice that you can't sell "locked" items! Wouldn't it be nice to be able to "lock" and "unlock" from that selling tab??!?! This is something I noted LOTRO has... Additionally, with a simple checkbox you can filter so you either see locked items or not see em (in selling mode AND in viewing your inventory from within the backback.) If it's locked don't force me to look at it everytime I open my pack... I KNOW it's there, I locked it! Give me a checkbox to filter them out.
    • Don't you HATE (with a passion) when your character levels and you need to upgrade your equipment!! Ugh... Yes, it's fun to level but it's aweful to go through that IIS and mouse over everything in order to see what it is... then unlock it... then bring n the new gear.... then lock it... YUCK! Which brings me to my next point...
    • What's with the "mouse over fetish?!?!" It seems if you want to see what something is you need to mouse over everything... Certain things are FAR more practical in a "list" type of view... i.e. the LOTRO system. This brings me to my next point...
    • LIST VIEWS!! Imagine how nice it would be to view your items within your pack as a list versus those silly icons that ALL LOOK THE SAME! hehe Imagine being able to sort the header columns.... Alpha Order... Sort by Type (weapons, potions, etc...)... Wouldn't that be cool?
    • The bags that were provided for Gems and Collectables... ummm.... ALMOST a good idea. Keep thinking that one through and it might work for me. =)
    • My final point... although not part of the ISS but part of the Auction House Suckage (AHS)... Can you PLEASE add a "word search!!" sheesh!!!

Ok, for those of you that that haven't heard... I have officially boycotted the inventory system!! (unless the loot is worth even looking at). JOIN THE RESISTANCE!!! VIVA STROMREACH!!!

As for the OP subject. I'm not sure how much is serious and how much is joking...it can be taken either way.

I can think of far more interesting things for the DDO staff to work on then trying to fancy up stuff like that. You don't like having to unlock equipment you are done using to sell and equip the new stuff? It doesn't take that long.

So locked items don't appear in the sell window. That's the idea, so you can't sell them. Then don't lock them.

What's wrong with the gems and collectable bags, other then they will be adding a sell button to the gems bag? No idea provided there.

You do know you can turn off mouse overs, and adjust the rate at which they pop up right? So if you want to rest your mouse on something for 2 seconds before the pop comes up, you can. If the issue is with the pop ups coming up all the time right away, there is your solutions.

The list view is a good idea. Mostly with protection potions, because sometimes the tiny icons for cold, electric and sonic are a bit hard to tell apart. Fire and acid no problem. And when some weapons have the same graphic.

The biggest issue with inventory is how mixed up it gets when you are questing! The one thing I don't see on your list! I would like to be able to right click and assign which bag something belongs to! Or something that will help keep things organized!

    Couple of things...

On the locked items issue... The matter of everything getting "mixed up" as you say is a symptom, in my opinion, that might soon be resolved with a better inventory system.... Filters (for locked items and/or for sorting in a list) will help clean up the mess...again, in my opinion.

I'm not one to just point out a buncha problems and not offer suggestions... Maybe my suggestions aren't the best... *shrugs* Maybe someone like yourself can help me solve the problem here with better ideas.

So let's get those creative juices flowing and fix this ISS issue! hehe

Ok, how about this. Wanting locked items to appear in the sell window, so you can manage them seems like a lot of extra work for very little return.

    Your list idea is good.

What's wrong with gems and collectables save gems will have a sell all gems button added? When you turn in a collectable, it takes it out of your bag. Simple enough. Is it the opening of them and the gather? Do you want to auto gather them? Trade them from the bag?

The biggest issue with inventory is how mixed up everything gets. The view option would make inventory management much easier. Adding all sorts of filters and such sounds like it would make it tedious. I want to be able to know that weapons go in the bag I want weapons in, potions and components into the bag i want for those and so on.

How about Inventory Space? Stacking Arrows in 1000 instead of 100 (if you can stack glass bottles, you can stack bigger numbers of sticks with points). Changing to a text list? Yeah, that may would be neat, but... eh... *shrug*

... but... the Auction House... Yes, a word Search would be awesome! Sometimes I KNOW what I want (Mummy Wrappings) and searching through all the +1 blah blah of blah blah Plate is time consuming.

Making a stack got to 1000 instead of a hundred doesn't seem like as big a deal as making huge changes to the inventory. And I hope they add a quivers.

Well there's your problem .. You're looking under Heavy Armor for a Light armor

A word search would be very nice, nonetheless.

Thats the root of your problem....Mummy Wraps - ugly as they are, will not be found in the Heavy Armor section... No wonder you have all that blah blah blah plate armor....grin.

Other than the external mixing of items from page to page, most of the other issues are minor ones for me. (Try playing a Ranger with lots of two weapon combos and bows and arrows and thieves tools and tons of clickies and pots. I got the ten hot bars pretty filled, but still am missing a number of things (what with spells and feats and skills to click on too!)

I know Beherit... and trust me, his eyeballs *do* hurt. =)

Getting back on topic however, This can't be the first time someone has pointed out (constructively) some opportunities for improvement on this Inventory system of ours. hehe

I have a hard enough time keeping my computer desk organized... hehe I hear about people spending way too much time "organizing their inventory" and not playing! hehe

*raises his fist in the air*

Join the backpack boycott! Leave those gems in the chest and then, only then, will the god of devs notice us!

All it would take is a menu item or rightclick (though Turbine seems allergic to Microsoft's use of the right mouse button):

    Sort Items By -->
    .....Name
    .....Lock Status
    .....Bind Status
    .....Value
    .....Type
    .....Date Added

"Date Added" might be the trickiest, but it is also the least useful and easiest to skip. Name, Value, and Type would be the easiest (because the Brokers already sort by Value, and the AH already sorts by Type), and Value and Type would be the most useful. For whatever reason, Turbine has been reluctant to use the APIs already available in Windows, and include the types of actions that Windows users expect (see: export of the Adventure Compendium in CSV or XLS format).

    Yeah, the Invetory System blows...

At least...at least give us an auto-arrange button that will move everthing up a few slots and leave a whole bag empty, instead of 24 assorted spaces...

Yeah, even single-player RPGs have a better UI and inventory system layout than DDO.

I'd be happy if things just stayewd inthe same place when ya swapped em out. I like to keep my first backpack slot empty for lootng, Weapons in Slot 2, Scrolls in Slot 3, and Items/potions in 4/5. I spend so much time rearanging my Inventory on my rogue its rediculous.
