    Default Superior potency question

I have a +3 superior potency heavy mace. The mace I am not proficient with since I play drow wizz. Can I still get the benefit from the superior potency? I imagine the potency part will work, but I will suffer penalty for not being proficient when attacking?

    Help plz

Correct, you will get the benefit to your spell casting while wielding the item, regardless of proficiency.

And you suffer -4 to-hit when physically attacking with the mace. But, it doesn't matter because a high level Wizard (non-battle mage) shouldn't be swinging much anyway.
