I guess I need to go to Armor Class School. I have various characters who can get near a 40 AC... but nothing like 50-60 like I'm seeing.

I'm working on my first melee.. my displacer/intimidator... So at level 9 I have this:
+5 Full Plate, +4 Mithril Tower Shield, Iron manacles (+4 Protection), Fighter Armor mastery to get my full dex bonus (+2) --> 37 AC

What is my next step? Is Combat Expertise the only way to go? Is Dodge worth the investment?

Combat expertise is a simple boost, but there is alot of ways.

Bring up dex and armor mastery

+5 mith fp and high dex< Dwarfs can fit up to a 28 dex in MFP >

Choasguard are +2 dodge AC that stacks with everything, but you need to either be lawful or have 20+ UMD

Chattering ring is a +3 dodge bonus, a very sought after piece of raid gear

Barkskin potions are a +3 natural armor bonus, madstone rage is a +4 natural armor bonus, a rangers barkskin can be up to +5 natural armor bonus

Dodge is a +1 ac with no penalty like combat expertise

Halflings get a +1 natural size bonus to ac

+5 protection cloaks and necklaces are relatively common nowadays

Alot of different sources for AC boosts, though my favorite has to be mithral warforge, with the abbot docent, and maxed dex< 10 base, +5 mithral body +6 docent +8-9 dex for even more then you can get from a delving suit>
    Aundair, New Khyber
    Alreck Gingerbarrel(15clr/1barb), Torrak Gingerbarrel(16 Brd), Oat(13 Rgr/3Ftr), Moxxy(16 Sor), Thorrac Gingerbarrel(6 Pal/1 Ftr) <<Current Toons>>

    Thanks!

Can't plan on a Chattering ring, but I will up dex and dex mastery...
I'll put defensive fighting back in my hotbar...
I'll upgrade my stat items when I hit level 10, and look for a new protection/deflection kit
..take dodge as one of my fighter feats
..keep drinking barkskin pots and asking for shield of faith...
..and stand next to a Paladin, Smodge's will do just fine.
