    Default Give us a break

I run with a lvl 14 cleric on khyber and people always say "hey Zope throw me a heal " obvisouly they ask me that when im out of mana ....A good way to get a cleric to join a group is say "will donate wands" that would help us out alot !! And people always say there tired of waiting for a cleric.......well we clerics DO NOT get really anything from a quest sure we will get a thanks or something like that sure that helps it but seriously clerics need a break we heal ALL THE TIME and Battleclerics is popular because the can play 2 roles a fighter a healer which makes them not so boring also if ur out of mana on a Battle cleric u can just go straight to healing and tanking it out .And also we use Mnomonics like any other normal item We havea -1 to loot or something .....im always tired of supporting a party without wands or plat givin in return but if u ask me to heal you PROVIDE Your OWN WANDS!!!!LOL let me put it this way clerics really get a down on a quest cause the rely on something anything u never know . Think about it if a party member donated 2k to a cleric for each quest 2x6=12kpp which is alot for some or a cure serious wand thats 300 charges of healing .... i just want to plea plz give us a break and share some money its hard to live like a cleric. To end with i Know clerics shouldnt rely on wands or anything at that but u ar forced to when u have a zerging mana sponge

I would like to say ty all that donate to me and the cleric foundation
I just wobble around and hopefully do something right.

It's expensive to be the cleric.

I am always surprised at the number of players I come across that have no concept of the financial expense a cleric player faces to be an effective healer. Since I gravitate towards playing various fighter builds and DPS rogues, I know going in I'm going to pull alot of heals. Because of that, I generally hand all the wands, scrolls and cool guy healer gear I loot over to the cleric to either use or sell. After the run, I always try to throw some plat your way as well. I don't understand why I don't see more players throwing at least some coinage to the cleric. Maybe some just don't know how expensive being the healer is. Maybe some just don't care.

I hear often that it is hard to find a good healer. Here's a little secret people......when you run with a good cleric, make sure you take care of them. You will find yourself more often on their "A" list and it will become alot easier for you to find one to run with.

A slight dissent from someone with multiple clerics (one capped, one 6th and rising, and one 3rd).

Clerics are expensive to run, IF you choose to run them that way. Fighters can be expensive to run (Tons of POts etc) if they choose to run them that way. Bards are expensive to run if they end up UMDing scrolls all the time.

As a cleric, I carry a handful of scrolls (RD, Heal, Mass Restore) but only about 10 each. I also carry a couple of CSW wands (purchased by my haggle fiend bard, which by the way is the way to go if you either have or know a good haggle skill toon, you can pick those supplies for less than list price (for example those 11K CSW wands only cost my bard about 9K each instead of the 13K the cleric would have to spend. It really adds up over time.)

On quest, I cast using mana as needed. I will use Divine Healing often when normal spells might seem overkill and overheal. I make sure to use good devotion or potency items when casting healing/spells. Cure wounds is a reactive exercise. It is just as spell point effective to Proactively eliminate an enemy (Command, etc) as it is to cure up your team after the battle. Effective use of CC spells, or Direct Damage spells can be just as effective. Bringing up a suitable and completely expendable Summoned Monster can save the party a lot of damage. The Summoned Monster will get aggro of some mobs, will provide more flanking bonuses (very useful in small parties) and provide a very worthwhile edge in encounters.

Now should the cleric be responsible for babysitting everyone. No fffing way. Everyone should be able to cover many of the common events for that level of encounter. Pots drop from breakables all the time, as do coins and gems used to buy more pots. Keep those useful clickies you find. A nice Remove Curse, Cure Disease, Neut Poison, Secret Doors, etc Clickie (you never run out of pots again). Hold onto and USE those items, those also reduce the outlays.

Given this playstyle and expectation of how others I play with should have some degree of self attention, I do not end up blowing through wads of cash with my clerics. Are donations welcome, sure. Are they needed, not too often. On certain quests, the party has sprung for extra supplies, since the nature of the quests did not allow for (finding a shrine or recalling). (Like doing Velah on elite and making sure we had more than enough RD scrolls to cover any possible needs so that we succeeded on the first time.)

Running a purely reactive Healbot is probably more expensive than running a Cleric.

I party heal with my battlecleric, and still fight. The rule i go by and tell the party is this.

    ***
Im a battle cleric, but i will heal you. But i only have so much mana and only so many scrolls i am willing to waste on keeping you up. You don't wanna try and find out how much im willing to spend to keep you up. Because its free for me to carry you to a shrine. If you don't like this, and dont have potions, and cant heal yourself or protect yourself its not my problem ***

And the people who think thats ****, are the ones that are usually the ones unwilling to by pots, use a shield, protection items, or give money to the average cleric.

I don't ask for money or give it, because i use up just as much money on my characters as the cleric spends on my characters.

I have about 1000 CSW pots on my barbarian when i restock him, about 500 RSD pots on my paladin, and 400 heal and 100 res on my bard. I got just as much invested in healing tools as the cleric, so i dont see why i should give him money to heal the idiots who didnt.

My favorite is when people use the 'it's more expensive to be a fighter' arguement due to expensive weapon costs. First of all, weapons last a LOT longer than wands. Second, my cleric also uses weapons...even paras and disrupters, so I guess that makes it twice as bad. Third, I have melee types too and it's not even close. I buys the best gear I can for my melee guys and I still end up building money with them instead of hovering above 1000 plat (like some of my clerics). Maybe some people just buy a lot of haste potions or something!

I don't have any issues recieving gifts from the party. And I don't have to ask! And they always say thank you! Maybe I got all my PuGs trained on THelanis... I would recommend to find a quest that you would get alot of loot without using any items up and run it once a day. I did! TS. For six months. now all my (5)clerics are sitting pretty and can actually run Ghosts a couple of times without going broke! THen I just do TS again...

Ok, maybe not everybody's cup of tea but it is a solution. I have found that I cannot change anyone's minds and inforcing charity doesn't make any friends. FIshing for compliments doesn't work either. It is a downside of a cleric, the expect healing and healing and raising and healing and buffing, but forget we are not made of money. SO I earned my own, and started complimenting the casters, tanks, rogues on their job and suddenly everybody is doing it! Not saying I started the trend, but it is a suggestion with the people you play with.

I tend to run with the same group over and over, but essentially its the same if I pug...make it well known that wands are very expensive and everyone should have some means of healing themselves, especially AFTER the fights. I have a standing rule that you will suck down a potion or as so many other classes can heal, patch up the party when the fight is over. It is also a great idea, battle cleric or not, to recognize that offensive spells can greatly reduce the amount of healing necessary. I always find it easy to cast 1 greater command and let 6 trolls sit on their butts than cast 8 cure spells...

That "something" meaning cure serious heal pots? Resist Pots? Restore pots? Cure whatever pots? Cure Serious Wands in my case? These days most good fighters are pretty self reliant. Burst heal me in the heat of the battle but even then believe me I am watching my health and taking pots. I don't bother to announce it in group when I am doing it so maybe that's why you don't think it's happening.

I don't agree with that at all. I see a lot of people in PUGs who are not self-reliant. You are not the norm, trust me.

...and I can watch a red bar, no I know when people take pots. It's not that I think it's not happening, it's that I know it's not happening.

I tip my cap to the Clerics of DDO. It is easily the most expenive class to play in the game. It DoES make sense however to join a good guild and maybe they can donate some wands and scrolls to the common cause

Running a cleric doesn't HAVE to be expensive. If the cost was really that prohibitive, I wouldn't have three clerics. Do I carry wands and scrolls? Yes. Do I use them? Maybe. If I have to use a Heal or Resurrection scroll, something has gone seriously wrong, but only happens once or twice a week. If it's a tough quest, I'll spend as many SP as it takes to keep the party alive, but that may not leave much for keeping your little red bar full at all times.

At the start of a quest, I only heal everyone up most of the way, then check to see who's topping themselves off as we walk down the deserted hallway. In my experience, those with the most HP tend to be the ones without potions. Secondly, that's not always bad. In a good group, I'll spend most of my time tossing Heals at the beefy fighter or barbarian who's keeping aggro off of everyone else. That's how it should work, and doesn't bother me at all. If SP are at a premium, it's up to the cleric to decide who's expendable.

If you're not wasteful with your resources, it should be no big deal. After all, the +4 Bodyfeeder Kama of Greater Halfling Bane that you got as a quest reward will buy you a wand of CSW and then some.

That, of course, is at level 14. Through the mid-levels, I usually expect to spend a bit more on wands.

Listen, I solo healed the titan on elite with a bunch of people that had never run that raid before today. it can be expensive to be a cleric, no doubt about it. You are talking to a cleric that buys heal scrolls 100's at a time.

That being said, if you are using all of your tools at your disposal you should be able to make out just fine. My clerics are my main characters and I hover at between 1 and 2 million plat.

If I deleted all my alts I could probably squueze another million plat out of them, and my clerics financed them.

The key to making money as a cleric is simple. Nuke when you need to, CC when you need to, and get in there with a paralizer or a disruptor when you need to.

    You clerics can do it.

Both of my main clerics have 1.5 million gold (not plat), it's the lower ones that are hurting. But I manage and do ok. I am the ONLY CLERIC IN MY GUILD (darnit! can't someone else roll a cleric up! OR did dazzle them with mucho cleric awesomenest that the idea to try to roll one would destroy the fabric of space and time!) I tend to be thrifty and clever with both the wands and scrolls and mana pots, but also with the mana itself. In quests I know that it will be difficult or don't know at all very well, I tend to heal with wands/scrolls and offsetting that with mana alot until I see a shrine. If it is use or lose, I buff then shrine, still saving mana from the buffing I had to do anyways. I practice that alot in TS, and SC, and other quests that are long and I know well, so when I get to the unknown ones, I automatically go into mana conservation mode, saving mana forthe big fights that I cannot keep up if I am wand whipping.

No, I am not ashamed to use a wand at level 14. As long as it is not your only way to heal, it's ok.

Personally speaking, there are few things more rewarding than seeing a fighter/barbarian with 1/4 to 1/2 health chugging potions, then tossing a heal scroll on them. Those that come to the quest prepared are much more appreciative than those who don't.
