Yup, they also can deliver spells for you.

Druids (and rangers) only get 1 companion in 3.5, they progress in strength similar to a mount or familiar. A lot better than dozens of 2HD wolves following you around at levels when they can be one-shotted.
Anyway, if they implement druids of the shapeshifting variety, they won't get companions and it'll probably be easier to code than wildshape.

    From the SRD....

If the familiar dies or is dismissed by the sorcerer, the sorcerer must attempt a DC 15 Fortitude saving throw. Failure means he loses 200 experience points per sorcerer level; success reduces the loss to one-half that amount. However, a sorcerer’s experience point total can never go below 0 as the result of a familiar’s demise or dismissal. A slain or dismissed familiar cannot be replaced for a year and day. A slain familiar can be raised from the dead just as a character can be, and it does not lose a level or a Constitution point when this happy event occurs.
The wiz/sorc loses 200 xp per level. You *know* that would raise holy heck in the game. You can't negate that loss. Would you lose an enhancement due to xp loss? Yes - wanna try to code that? No.

Since this turned into a familiar/warhorse/animal companion thread, guess I will post a thread suggesting animal companion ideas for druids/rangers.

Druids are taking so long because of all the spells, which also happens to be the same issue that makes raising each level cap take so long (new spells for the classes we have).
What spells? We have the good ones now.....just give us druids.
The big issue would be shapechanging.......
And to do it right we should have companions, but there is already a temp substitute in game......ability to summon.

IMO you could give us druids right now with very little new stuff needed......the only real issue would be how to implement shapechanging.
And this can be simplified by limiting the types of critters.....and by not allowing many things to alter the basic stats......you change into a bear, you fight like a bear.......no ring of balance or +5Prot item etc.

Give us druids now!......leave monks for later....they belong in an Oriental campaign anyway....(they shouldn'y be hard either by the way.........minor changes to unarmed combat......new attack animations........bonus to Tumble skill at higher lvls.......should take care of most issues....
They just gain feats at certain levels......and some immunities that are already in place.)

Druids and then monks.......give us what you can now....and improve later. Plz!

I don't understand why people keep saying monks have been pushed back. I want proof, give me a link to a post.

Otherwise, i'll expect them with mod 6, and I'll expect mod 6 before the end of the year. That's still 3 months away and they've already eluded to the fact that they've been working on mod6 in the mod 5 release notes. This might mean they are going to go from mod5 to mod6 with no updates in between, and it might not. Whatever the case, there is still a lot of time between now and then.

Monks will rock whenever we see them.

I know you just asked for proof but I know there was a dev post saying it won't make it to mod 6 but soon after (ie 6.x). I cannot find it though

Now I don't remember any dev post before that saying the monks got delayed from their "Fall 07" status, but what do you expect from Turbine, not like they ever talk to us (and no Quarion's post saying there will be more communication doesn't count as I have yet to see anything).

So I think it went straight from "fall 07" (state of the game) to "soon after mod 6" (random dev post buried in some random thread).
