Unless I'm mistaken, you can't range the pillars without Precise Shot - which is on some items, of course, these days.

On the Wizzie tactic - why bother with Flesh to Stone - just hit 'em with the 4th level Fear spell. We usually don't kill anything at all - between both of those approaches - when slaughtering Velah.
