Ever since it first bugged, me and my guildies have just done outer then inner
Saying you cant control it maybe be a little exaggerated but try this
break in direction of either / or \ and o is the pillar. IE 3 falls North East.
by doing the outsides makes it so the laser isnt in range of next pillar.

Are the titan and the lazer designed to be able to knock over the pillars?
I was under the impression if they did, they were not working as intended.
Good so the request for the DEVs to look at the encounter is valid.
This happened to a 4 man run I was doing with some friends. On the 5th pillar (if going clockwise from the bottom left), we knocked the titan down, and when firing the laser, the 6th pillar went down with the shot.
