Thread: Making Coyle

    Default Making Coyle

I was running East 3 earlier today, and decided I would make a version of Coyle. So I watched him as we battled those around us, getting a better idea of what he could do. He dual wielded a Long sword and Club, wore what appeared to be plate mail armor, and slung first and second level spells. Sure, Coyle is only level 8 (CR 8 Human), but I figured I would go to 14 since we can get that high. Based on what I saw, here is my idea for a version of Coyle.

Why a low wisdom and yet enough ranger levels to cast spells? You never see Coyle use the ranger spells, so I figured I would ignore that aspect. I did not go mostly fighter because Coyle does not seem to fight hand to hand as much as he throws a weapon or spell, and I went more strength than dex because one of the two weapons he had was not finessable.

It is hard to match exactly what Coyle is, but I would like to think of this as a close and entertaining version. A few more Ranger levels from a cap increase and my version will be good against all outsiders (picked that because of the majority of the enemies in East 3 being Reavers and Mephits).

I have done a Fighter 4 / Wizard 10 with one of my characters. Doing the oposite, where it is more combat than casting should be no different really. Different and as efficient as the player behind the keys, but most are not willing to try, that is how it should be classified.

Oh, and when I take him into PvP you know all I can do is spam MM and try to throw daggers at the people in the rest / recover areas.

On the contrary my friend. Intelligence is book smarts, wisdom is street smarts and common sense. Wisdom should be 0, but I can't go any lower than 8 with a human.

I always thought he was a straight wizard with a base INT of 8 cause he always uses that **** wand...

So - Follower of Xoriat (Making him chaotic)
Not very Bright, Wise and has a voice that sounds like Tom Bodet from the Motel 6 commercials... (Base 8 in all mental stats and no points into diplomacy)
Dual weilds in melee (At least a base 17 STR and DEX)
Likes to use wands (Wand mastery as high as it can go)
Unlimited Mana and uninteruptible spellcasting. (Super high Concentration + Every mana boost you can fit in the build)

Observe him now. When I did East 3 a couple days ago he was in heavy armor with a long sword (might have even been bastard) and holding a club. Only used Magic Missle and Scorching Ray while in combat. Straight wizard would be to powerful magically. Besides, you do straight wizard and you need to add Heavy Armor Prof and Martial Weapon Prof in there.

No one will EVER, EVER group with you, and if they did I would expect to see yourself greased on the ground most of the time.

But I would be a tactical genous! I would only attack the things that were much to strong for me, and make sure to range targets that could not be engaged.

Maybe I'm thinking of whacked out cultist Coyle rather than zerging butthead Coyle but I never noticed him wearing heavy armor. His chronies look like they're wearing heavy armor but his stuff looks like the leather armor skin to me. I play rangers mainly so I may have have never noticed as I barkskinned and elemental resisted his dumb@$$. Heavy armor and weapons would be a good waste of his feats. Also remember I said straight wizard with an 8 base INT. (It's teh uber ) Gave him the WIZ int enhancement chain to bring it up to 11 and with a +1 INT item he could cast lvl 2 spells. I also went with enlarge so as to grab maximum aggro from a distance with his scorching ray.
