Why is it called Labour day, if no one is working?

And why are apartments all together in the same building? And why do drive-up ATM's have braille on the keypad?

You know, I was just wondering about that today. I mean a blind person couldn't see the screen to know which button to push, braille or not. /shrug

I kind of got carried away with the odd qualities of English langauge and decided to search the web for a few more.

The dump was so full it had to refuse more refuse.

The oarsmen had a row about how to row.
He was too close to the door to close it.
A stag does strange things when the does are present.
After a number of injections my jaw became number.
The artist saw a tear in his painting and shed a tear.

On a slightly relevant note, I present to you:

    The Euro Language

The European Commission has just announced an agreement
whereby English will be the official language of the EU
rather than German which was the other possibility. As part
of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that
English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted
a 5 year phase-in plan that would be known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly,
this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c"
will be dropped in favour of the"k". This should klear up
konfusion and keyboards kan have 1 less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year,
when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This
will make words like "fotograf" 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be
ekspekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes
are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double
letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.
Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent "e"s in
the language is disgraseful, and they should go away.

By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as
replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v". During ze fifz year,
ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and
similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of
    leters.

After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer
vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi
to understand ech ozer. Ze drem vil finali kum tru! And zen
ve vil tak over ze world!

    Hope you enjoyed it!

If it was not just a bit of sarcasm...

It was bone thrown to the communtist/socialist parties for the common working man, IE the laborers. So labor day.

What I find so funny is that the poor slobs that this holiday was meant for, the bottom rung workers, are often still working today. Garbage was picked up today, road work was going on and don't forget all the poor souls in retail busting their hump to make those labour day sales figures pop.

It used to be May 1 here, like the rest of the world. May Day/International Day of Labor smacked of Communism to the inter-war congress, so they moved and renamed it. And lots of people have to work on Labor day because we have no labor movement worth the name in in the country.

My bank only has a drive up ATM. So foot traffic has to go there as well.

Whats really funny is the FDR memorial, has 10 inch braille letters. Because all government monuments have to have everything translated into braille.

Who's going to be able to read 10 inch tall braille?

ROFL... why don't they just get with the times and put a speaker with a recording of whatever the monument says with a push of a button. ><
