    Default Caster Must-Have's

I posted this in the sorc forums, because thats what I built but Im sure some here dont read the sorc forums, seeing as you are wizards, but the same question still applies.

Ok so what does the average, or above average, caster need in his backpack?

What should I be carrying around with me? Ive only really played melee (Paladin and Barbarian) to high level so this is the first time on a caster. He's level 3 atm, its alotta fun but tough going compared to my barb or pally.

If you could, can you make your list as exhaustive as possible. I mean, tell me what I need at level 1 throo 14, wands, weapons, scrolls, potions, robes, etc.

I have been told by a very, very, very good sorcerer that I should be on the lookout for a potency item, so I acquired one of them. And I assume that I should just keep on upping them every chance I get.

What else would you guys recommend?

Oh and thank you in advance.

at level 3 not much. Maybe some cure pots. Later levels you're gonna want a full set of resist robes, PoP X or better, good concentration item, Cure pots, Either pots or clickies that remove curse, posion, etc... Good INT and CON item, Some scrolls of things like true seeing, reconstruct, and other spells you don't cast too often. Stoneskin wands are nice if you can find them. A potency, spell pen, and lore item. All I can think of for now. Your SP will be enough for the most part at later levels.

Better yet, get yourself a magi club and sell the PoP X to some sucker whose willing to pay 100x what a magi club will cost you. You'll use up the extra SP while buffing, and it frees up your trinket slot for something more useful (jerky or Kardin's eye for example).

Actually I use the Head of good fortune in my trinket slot. But remember if you use a robe or club of Magi don't forget to re-equip it before you shrine.

    Default Hmm...

In general, I would keep the following items:

Potency Item and Lore Item - I prefer these on weapon slots, and you can swap these out as necessary. Instead of general potency, the specific effect version can be found with lower level requirements (i.e., use Combustion for Fire spells, Magnetism for Electricity spells, etc.). Combining your appropriate potency items and lore items into weapon sets can be helpful.

Spell Penetration Item - OK, not a must-have, but I like them. Since my hands are taken, I prefer to wear one of these in whatever slot is available (DQ Torc rocks, but get what you can).

Spell Point Item - I prefer robes. I wear them when I shrine, throw buffs, and then usually am low enough on SP to swap back to another robe. I agree with the poster above about the pearls of power, though - overrated. Weapons are fine if you want to go that route.

Resist Robes - Get a set of all of the elemental resists. Yes, you can cast the spells, but this way you don't need to. Saves spell points and comes in handy. You can get Guard or other effects on these as a bonus.

Other Robes - I like the DR robes (Hammerblock, Axeblock, and Spearblock). I would also make sure you have a Deathblock robe available. These can be combined on the higher level robes as well.

Spell Components - Buy a bunch. Fairly obvious, but it really bites to run out of them in a quest. I keep 600-1000 of each.

General Purpose Weapon - At low levels, you can still melee to some extent. It comes in handy when you are out of spell points. At higher levels, I keep wounding daggers of puncturing handy for when I can sneak in some auto-crits.

Scrolls - These are generally overused, IMHO. I keep some general purpose ones around (DDoor, Greater Teleport, etc.) just in case. At lower levels Knock is actually not bad, but it quickly becomes useless. If you conserve SP at all, you shouldn't need many of these.

Wands - Fireball wands can break doors - very convenient for us wussy types. Magic missile wands can hurt almost anything. Don't bother with most of the rest of them, although you can use the buff wands if you prefer (I carry some but always forget to use them).

Healing Pots - Carry a lot. You wont have a ton of HP, so that extra boost at the right time can make a big difference.

That's pretty much it - mages are generally very cheap to play. You need a couple of decent items that are generally not hard to find, and pretty much go from there.

    Good luck to you.

Things any character should have provided they're not inherently immune to certain effects:

    Potions:
    Cure Potions
    Remove Fear Potions

    Potions or Clickies of:
    Lesser Restore
    Neutralize Poison
    Remove Curse
    Remove Blindess
    Remove Disease

    Clickies:
    Shield
    Aid

Optional but normally good to have:
Barkskin +3 potions (if you like having an ac)
Heroism clicky or potions (for mid level)
Haste clicky or potions... or both
Shield of Faith +3 potions (once again, for those that value an AC)
    False Life clicky
    Divine Power clicky
Mneunomic Enchancers (if you can get them)

What a caster, needs to find as soon as possible.
    - The best +casting stat item you can find
    - The best +SP item they can find
    - The best +spell damage item they can find
    - The best lore item they can find
    - If you have enough open slots, Spell Focus items for your most comonly cast spells that have a DC.
    - Every concieveable way to increase your hit points.
    - A decent striding item as you will often be backing away from things.
    - And never ever run out of components!

That should pretty much sum it up.

And drag them onto a hotbar...the quantity is displayed, so you can easily see if you're running low.

A nice set of robes is a casters best friend. Im quite partial to fearsome robes of spearblock/axeblock/etc. Another big thing is spell organization on your hotkey bars. i like to seperate by type of spell, cc/damage/buffing, etc. andif you carry teleport, give it its own toolbar for each of the destinations so you can escape quickly if you need to.

In the wizzy guide (link in my sig) I list out all the items I have in my bags and compiled suggestions from others on what to put in them. Take a look when you get some time.
