Can you honestly say that beholders are unbalanced in DDO as they are? I mean sure they are a huge pain to characters that like to run around with 80 buffs (like my WF battlemage hehe), but they almost always end up dead with one or two players dead. Ghoste: The dominate you are talking about is from vampires, and is not the same as Dominate Person (the wizard spell). The devs have stated that characters are immune to Charm spells, and I can personally only remember getting the pink hat in a battle with the LOTD vampire. True they COULD make charm spells work like the vampire dominate, but they didn't, at least not yet.
The vampire is just using a typical dominate spell, and Mindflayers use psionic dominate. Both use these dominations to make the player stand still, rather than attack their teammates. This is evidenced by the fact that the vampire usually accompanies a dominate attempt with the statement "You, stand there and make no actions". So, theoretically the vampire / mind flayer could make the player attack his comraders like any other charm spell, they just don't.
