    Default TWF Wounding/Puncturing Build Request

    From Sigtrent's Build Request Thread

    Build Name: Master Assassin
    Author: Sigfried Trent
    Requester: Greenstone
    Last Updated: 07/06/10

Key Words [Assassin, Rogue, Traps, Human]

    Objectives
The original request was for a dex based wounding of puncturing user. Now for those who don’t know, wounding of puncturing used to be the end all be all of trash mob killing weapons. When mosters got to 0 con they died and you could verry quickly do that with a WOP rapier. It was nerfed so it only stuns them now, which is decent but nothing like what it was.

    Design
Because of that change I altered this build significantly. Instead of WOP specific, I decided to make a build working wtih stat damage of any kind. Rogue gets a nice strength damage feat at level 10 and they also do awesome damage on stunned targets so instead of the original ranger, I went with a pure rogue.

I also want a range or stat damage so I went with both slashing and piercing and made sure to get oversized TWF to maximize weapon versatility and high crit range weapons in the off hand. Because scimitars are the best STR damage weapons (due to being slashing and having the highest slashing crit range) I couldn’t go with finesse, and besides, it was eating up a feat on the original. So that makes a dex focus useless. You still need enough for the TWF feats, but that’s it.

Human was the best race choice at this point since they could bump STR, get extra skill points and most critically, an extra feat for oversized TWF. Maxing out sneak attack was the next priority and that is pretty easy to do through assassin and buying enhancements.

Because you need to bypass DR on wounding and weakening weapons the human versatility gives a nice damage boost along with skill boosts for the trapping side of the build. You also get save boost for running traps, and so forth. Haste boost gives you more DPS/stat hitting and that makes for many action boosts. I threw in quick draw both to make these boosts better to use and to let you quickly switch from stat damage to dps weapons once you bottom out a foe.

Defenses are not great and damage is pretty high so subtle backstabber, diplomacy and such are critical to combat success. Gearing up for greater HP is definately a priority.

Rogue skills are very good and more or less take care of themselves in the build. Skill mastery makes up for any weakness in using enhancements to bump skills.

    Play
Avoid agro, finish targets, find a DPS partner who will pull agro reliably. Scour the AH for good deals on Wounding of Puncturing and Weakening of Enfeebling weapons.

    Variations
You may find it better to take power attack over quick draw, especially at high level where you face red names immune to stat damage and your accuracy is high. At lower and mid levels often the reduced accuracy is not worth the extra damage and agro. 32pts is simple, just bump whichever stat you feel needs help. Every stat will have some kind of benefit for the build.

A rogue is just as good if not better. If you go two levels of paladin and take fighter at 14 you can get greater two weapon fighting.

Just remember that most mobs at end game have dr that you must bypass to get the wounding and puncturing effect to go off. I might start with a higher str score myself.

Power Attack will help bypass that DR.

A lot of the build choices were designed to deal with that. Power attack and sneak attack being the two primary ones. Without PA you are looking at 9-15 with a +1 weapon. PA takes it to 14-20. Sneak attack would add 3-8 more. That should be by most DR since 10 is the most common with the occaisonal 15 here and there. And of course you could use a rage potion or other damage buffs.

You could certainly start with 16 str instead of 14 and take dex down to 16. I'm not sure the extra 1 point would make a big differnece for DR though.

If you want to build a wound/puncture character, these stats seem fine. The 14 STR is base, afterall. 20 STR is easily reachable with a +5 item/+1 tome, with a 22 being "endgame" currently (+6 item/+2 tome). The +5 damage mod from 20 STR coupled with the +5 from PA will be more than enough to overcome the DR that's currently in-game.

Wounding needs to bypass dr but puncturing does not. My 14th lvl ranger does this all the time. Has percision turned on not for the increase in to hit but to reduce damage to the point where he doesn't draw any aggro.

Also you have power attack listed for both 3rd and 6th lvl feats.

Whoops, thanks for the error.. using this custom format thing leads to some copy paste errors sometimes.

Thanks for the tip on puncturing. My wizard does the low agro approach, but on my fighter I've seen how powerful it can be if you combine decent damage with puncturing so I though I'd go for a bit of that on this build. (ultimately barbarian is best at that strategy I think)
