Welcome back
Couple things about a sorcerer
1. Drow's make excellent sorcerer, you only need a character with 400 favor to be able to make a drow- by about 8th level you should have 400 favor without trying to get favor.
2. Drow's have a +2 charisma stat bonus so you can start with 20 charisma.
3. If you don't know the spells very well, it may be beneficial to run a wizard and get all the spells and then figure out which ones work best. As wizards can scribe all the spells in their spellbook. Sorcerer only get the spells that they pick when they level. You can swap spells but only every 3 days and it costs money.
4. By the time you run a character up though the levels to cap, you should have had the opportunity to see the +6 items and such.
5. Sorcerers can be solo'd - especially in the explorer areas (gianthold, orchard, etc.)
6. All mages should have a buff or defensive spell and an offensive spell for each level of spells - at least when you have all your spells.
Some of the best buffs for mages are at 1st level - nightshield, jump- then higher you have blur, heroism, greater heroism, stoneskin, displacement.
7. Insta-killing spells are also nice - pk, finger of death, dismissal
8. If you going the non-warforge route - getting a high umd is crucial to being self sufficient. Since umd is based off of charisma a sorcerer can get a decent umd using your skills points and charisma modifier.
9. Experiment and above all else have fun.
