Why are some toon names blocked?

Like specifically, there is no toon named "Stranger" on any server. Yet it won't let me use that name.

I see that it appears to be because the class name "ranger" is contained within the name... But as a database guy, I can't imagine how this would be a technical requirement... It had to be a decision.

So, why decide to block this?

How do you know there is noone named stranger on any server someone could have poped on every server during headstart and reserved the name

To prohibit misleading name choices. If I had a wizard named Ranger, that would be a confusing inconvience to the rest of the party anytime we had a ranger in the group.

Misadventure should have been blocked in that case, but it isn't.

I tried to make a WF named zombie....but I was blocked.....weird

Names of monsters and classes are blocked. However, a variation that contains part or all of those blocked names aren't. For example, "Ghoste". Tried it without the e back in beta and it was blocked. I also have a character named "Wraithe".

So chances are, yes someone has already made a character named "Stranger".

You may be able to check by trying to add the name to your friends list. It shouldn't let you do it if there is not a character with this name.

Or try sending an in game mail to Stranger. If nobody has a character by that name, you will get an error saying the recipient doesn't exist.

Nope... The message it gives you is different. If the name already exists, it says that the name already exists. If you try to make a toon named "Stranger" it tells you the name is not allowed.

I wonder how they did this with "Elf"... Maybe "Melf" and "Myself", etc, are also blocked?

Bummer... Not my choice, but I imagine someone wants to use those names.
