Transfer characters between accounts

There are many of us still in game that have been around long enough to remember the old "8 characters per account" limit (which was later increased to 10 etc etc).

For those of us who really enjoyed the game, this resulted in many of us obtaining (and paying full price for) multiple accounts so that we could continue to build new characters and enjoy the game even further.

However, since the creation of F2P several things have changed:

- the allowing of up to 30 character slots (I think, don't quote me) per account
- many new items in game are now bound to account
- epic raid and quest tokens are bound to account
- many DDO store purchases are bound to account

With all these changes, it is making it more and more difficult to want to play our various characters among these different accounts.

What I would like to see is the ability to transfer characters between accounts. Now, I don't mean ANY account. I mean accounts that are all under the same login name and paid by the same account information or possibly even allow people who have multiple login's, but a solid Credit Card history proving they own the account. By doing this, Turbine could avoid having people "sell" their characters to other people.

I've asked Turbine support team before, and they've said "they're working on it", but it has been over a year since I got that response and sadly have not heard anything since.

Yes, I am aware that Turbine loves $$ (what company doesn't !) and probably enjoys our extra money from the second, third, fourth etc accounts. But I'm sure by allowing us to at least merge some of the characters in those accounts to allow us to make better use of the bound to account features, may result in an overall happier customer base.

I'm curious now, how many other people are out there that are in the same place as myself and many of my in game friends and would be interested to pay for such a feature ?

Having multiple accounts under ONE login name IS possible and you CANNOT add other existing accounts to that login, ONLY new accounts.

Also, having the credit card history and other verifications to merge accounts with DIFFERENT login name would be entirely up to Turbine itself to verify and possibly putting your own account at risk should they determine it being an invalid request (account isn't really yours). The character transfer at that point would require more effort on their behalf and justly cost a higher price. (See other posts for more details)

No. But perhaps an Account MERGE as in all your accounts and characters go under one new account.

You know I am and have multiple accts under different login names but same CC and account holder info.

I would love something like this to combine those 2 accounts but doubt turbine will ever do because they love are extra cash that we put out every month for those extra accounts.

How can plat farmers be involved if the characters are under the SAME login name but just different accounts under that login ?

The credit card option I suggested would be entirely at Turbine's choice. It it looks wrong, they don't need to approve it.

Read his post transfer between accounts with same information such as cc and account holder names like Joe schmuck.

As long as they meet criteria will keep the farming away unless someone steeling your account info then turbine has issues and I will cancel in heartbeat if my account info is out for others to see and use.

Actually you're very wrong here. I currently have 5 accounts under the same login name. I simply went to my account at turbine and added another purchased account to the existing "main" account (login)

When you log in, you're provided the list of accounts, then asked to choose one to actually log onto.

If under same account holder info and such unless someone is stealing info from turbine then what are you talking about?

If someone iss stealing info that opens turbine to a bunch of lawsuits and such and I doubt they would let that happen.

I had the impression that he was asking for character transfers and this means that each character can be freely transferred between his accounts (under the same credit card). However, an account merge would include ALL characters between ALL accounts. Instead of making a one character at a time thing, make it a once-off thing where all accounts merged into one.

This can help those who made multiple accounts to bypass the character limit.

Anyone who passes there personal info around to a company like that is just dumb.

Anyways in his suggestion he said account history no way with your example would that work how could a platfarmer have same history as you over a few month period.

That isn't even near what he is suggesting he is suggesting for people with standing accounts with a HISTORY being keyword here to transfer or merge 2 acccts if don't have the HISTORY no go so that negates that example.

HISTORY is keyword.

Truth is, one of my other MMOs did this. There was a problem of people having too many accounts similar to what happened here as they increased the character limit cap so they just made an event where those who wanted to merge accounts have one chance and one chance only and only during that event to merge their accounts and they did not offer it ever again.

It worked because being a one-off event, the platsellers couldn't make it into a profitable business and everyone got their accounts merged. And Visty, you don't really know what we're trying to say here.

That would be another solution and all in all I think would work.

Still would like to have option what if don't have money at the time of event kinda leaves some people out.

As I said, account credit card HISTORY !

If the account is new, then I'm sure Turbine is smart enough not to approve the transfer. Worse, if they feel it's shady, they can ban both the accounts.

Yes there are lots of stupid people in this game and the world. I would hope this would actually remove some of them from the game. How is that a bad thing ? :rolleyes:

Transfering between accounts, if paid on a per character basis, yes would allow you to "avoid the cap per account". Let's say at $10 per transfer, how often would it be done and why would it matter? Turbine's making $10 per shot each time anyway.

And yes, I'd like to see on a per character basis, call me a dreamer.

I'd probably avoid a full transfer since I have more than 30 characters between the 5 accounts and actually only want to move a few of them to my "main" account. The others can stay in the original accounts of which I would continue to pay for anyway.

Let me be clear, I actually don't care about the Credit card option. It was only a SUGGESTION to help out other cases and I agree could possibly lead to problems. It was only a SECONDARY option. My first option of allowing transfers between accounts of the SAME login still stands.

If the accounts are under the same login, that means they've always been under that login. You cannot add accounts to a login that already exist, they can only be new one's.

Allowing the transfer of characters between those accounts, on a price per character basis would allow you to avoid character limits, but if you don't allow transfer to F2P accounts and only VIP one's, then they're making money on both sides and who cares how often you do it ? What's stopping them from doing that now to a F2P or VIP account?

They create the account, make the character, grind it and then sell it to someone willing to change the login info later?

People already have more than one login pointing to different accounts, this is what sparked the entire consideration about using CC history.

Wow, I answered this 3 times now. Maybe you need the step by step?

1) I log into Turbine Account
2) I go to the top of the page, I enter in the key from my box purchase
3) I create a new account
4) I assign the account a name
5) Turbine creates the account, charges my CC
6) I go to DDO login and log in
7) I choose the new account
8) I play the game

This help ?

Now, that all said, for those who did not actually purchase the box back when it used to be sold, I'm pretty sure you can't get them now.

Which I guess leads into the whole "Can we merge our accounts".....hmmm, sounds like a familiar thread :D

There I mention that you CANNOT add existing accounts. ONLY new ones.

Which leads into the whole asking turbine to manually approve accounts of different logins based on CC history etc etc.

I think Turbine is smart enough to figure out if an account is new or not and able to determine if its safe to transfer. Worse case, they ban all accounts involved and walk away from it.

3 weeks isn't having a history lol seriously

A history is a few months or more who is going to wait that time your arguments have no weight.

Ok...this post is in NO way me kissing up to my guild leader/officers!!! :D


Anyway, I just wanted to add that if they were to do something like this, they could check public IP addresses to find out if the accounts are run from the same geographical locations, as well as check the history as stated above. I believe there would be enough for them to check to make it viable, though they might need to add a disclaimer that transfers that cannot be verified will not be completed.

In addition, this could be something that is only available to VIPs that have had active accounts for a certain period of time...say 6 months or more...to try to avoid having accounts created, levelled, then sold. I think most people that have active VIP accounts for that long would be less likely to buy characters or accounts from other people, and with an exception such as this, it should make policing it a little easier.

Not to mention that if they started something like this, and had people constantly transferring 1 character away from their account, and/or attempting to transfer characters between accounts that log in from different geographical locations (like a character being moved from an account that logs in from an IP in South Korea, to an account that logs in from an IP in Atlanta, GA, USA), then it would be one more way for them to try to find some of those plat farmers...

Oh, and I'm sure that Turbine would love to add this, since I'm willing to bet that alot of people with multiple accounts have 1 VIP "main" and other Premium and/or F2P accounts. If that is the case, they will definitely make money when they offer to do account merges at the ridiculously low price of $29.95!!! :D And if you think about it...people already sell their accounts to other people...used to be a ton on ebay all the time. As long as Turbine charges for account merges, or per character for character merges, then they are making money on something that was done anyway and they never used to see a dime from.

Erm. Many parents who open new accounts for their kids do this. It's nothing new.

Turbine could certainly make this happen, and here's why. First, you'd have to pay for each additional character slot in the main account or else you wouldn't have enough room for all of those characters in the first place. Then you'd have to pay for each account you were merging into the main one. Finally, they'd of course want to make it a service only available to VIP subscribers with at least 6 months left on their subscriptions.

As long as they can find a way to make it pay, they can find a way to do it.

Using IP's would certainly help in the process, however, could not be the only part of the process as many people travel and will carry DDO on their laptops.

But I agree, adding IP verification would probably already be part of their process seeing as they probably already know the general IP usages of most farmers.

6 months left? Most pay monthly lol 6months left no but as for rest of post you are right they can prob make a decent sum of cash.

Again, if you read the rest of my posts, Turbine already has this problem with farmers setting up F2P accounts, farming out a character and selling it.

I'm sure they've already got things in place to take care of these cases, allowing character transfers would simply fall under the same "check" system.

People are into things for instant gratifacation that is human nature a very rare person will wait 3 months maybe.

Having a history means having a historey of activity like most would need atleast 6 months or more to prove it.

NOONE I mean NOONE will is going to wait 6 months or even 3 for a account.

Seriously if they are it is already happening lol

This will change nothing and make nothing easier to sell.

If anything it might help catch people especially if IP addresses and such are checked and I am sure with something like this it would be.

And as to telling someone to read whole post maybe you should take own advice you missed it 2 times before and had to be told to reread.:p

Wouldn't be perfect, but in most cases, each account probably logs in from the same IP subnet 80-90% of the time. I doubt that there are many accounts that move around frequently enough to be a problem.

the router in our house is set up to change the ip on a daily/hourly/dunno the rate tbh-rate
and i doubt my household is the only one

Exactly. It would certainly add a red flag to the request and then possibly make turbine dig a little deeper into both accounts, quite possibly ending up with someone getting their accounts closed :D

Without getting into the nitty-gritty....basically an ISP is assigned a "block" of IP addresses. That means they can only use certain IP numbers. Despite your router changing the IP on a regular basis, your ISP only lets you have certain ones....all of which point back to them and their general location.

They're not.

I found this site 3 seconds after a google search, and while I cannot attest to it's veracity, it shows exactly what I was talking about. Turbine could very easily (and most likely for little money or effort) get a similar IP map by ISP and use it to determine geographical locations.

Yes, ALL dynamic IPs change constantly...anywhere from every hour to every few months, but you will always have an IP from the same block that your ISP is assigned, unless you physically change providers and/or locations.

Changing providers would not necessarily be a red flag, provided both providers supply IPs to say...towns in Germany...or towns in Southern Australia, but when your login comes from China one day, Belgium 6 hours later, and then New Zealand 2 hours after that...you might have yourself a farmer.

I made the same suggestion a few weeks ago. I fully back them doing this, and would gladly pay/use TPs to do it.

As imple fail safe can be 6 months of same CC before you can make any transfers, and maybe you have to pay for a year upfront on the second acct.

And guys...chill, please. This is a suggestion, and we are discussing ways to make it possible, if it is...this arguing is making it much less likely that a Turbine employee will look at it and take it seriously, for better, or for worse.

Yeah, I fully agree, using CC history etc etc can be trickier. But as stated earlier, they can start with the accounts under the same login and make some quick cash while they work out the details for other options.

sure, it may only be a part of it, but it would require a huge check each time, and turbine just doesnt have the manpower for that

Well, that's where the checks and balances come in...hopefully Turbine would not jump on an account simply because of matching IPs, but matching IPs, plus CC history, plus account history, etc., can add up to a pretty convincing list of evidence.

Again, this is just a tool that can be used to help the process...not the solution.

No doubt, which is why I offered this as a SECOND choice.

I only wanted transfers for accounts within the SAME login. The other options would by far require higher attention, BUT, they could charge more for it to should they add it in :D

Well, true enough, which is most likely why they are so far behind on character server transfers, but that doesn't stop them from offering that. :D (though I doubt they need such an involved verification process for that)

Besides, another example of something that they did not offer, because it would be so easily exploited, but that they still put lots of manpower and effort into, and are now offering: Alignment changes!

Either way, I'd like to see what the majority response to this idea would be. (the account/character merge)

well, with the current implementation it cant be exploited in any way

i think ppl who said aligment changes could be exploited didnt thought that turbine might implemented it how it is in game already: the char generation. where it limits your choices by your class taken

but we are derailing abit now :)

I know, that's why I brought it up...they originally did not have it, and it was explained away as something that could be too easily exploited, then they finally put some work into it, and voila, now we can change alignment. Ah gotcha, misunderstood that one :)

Any other opinions or suggestions? I, personally, would never need this, but there are alot of people that I run with who would find such an idea very convenient.
