It refers to womanhood, as in misogyny (anti woman), androgyny (man-woman), and gynecology (treating the...er, womanhood)
So if no part of the sphinx is womanly, then it's a poor gynosphinx lol
Looking at the art it looks like "gynosphinx" and "androsphinx" just refer to male and female winged lions...which seems an odd way to name them...I would just have called them leosphinxes
