Default Low Light & Dark Vision?

Why don't we have these features? We have areas of complete darkness. We have NPCs with darkvision. Seems the code is already there. What gives?

There is the Underdark and Malchor's Undersun Goggles (has a vision effect to let you see in the Underdark). The effect tends to progress from cool to annoying in a rather short amount of time.

You sure those goggles still exist, the toon's I had them don't have them any more and I'm sure I didn't' toss them on all my toons no way that happened, I think they silently removed them once they decided they couldn't get the environment effect they wanted in the Underdark?

I used mine a few months ago and I still have them in my TR bank.

I think they wanted the dual effect in the Underdark (you can get around without them, but with them you can see much further away.)

Yes, it does, and that is neither low light vision or dark vision. It is an object we wear at the cost of valued protection. What is more evident in fantasy settings in terms of race abilities? Elves and Half-Elves or Feyborn have low light vision, and Dark Elves, Drow and other subterranean races have dark vision. I just don't understand why this wasn't added or considered when they added a environment that takes advantage of this racial trait.

Just asking, not expecting them to add it anytime soon.

They tried to when they created the Underdark in for MotU they were trying to create an environmental effect (I don't know the details on how it would have worked) but they just couldn't get it to work right. I think the purple haze found in the shadowfell stuff is want they got out of it ... so ya kind of glad they nixed it myself but who knows.

I could have sworn I saw a dev post about this not too long ago. (like in the last month)

Of course it may have been on the player's council forums, in which case I can't quote/tell you any details.

But basically, as I recall it, won't happen. For reasons... (If I happen to find the quote and it's in a public forum I'll share it.)

IIRC (and I may not), very early during the beta period for those that pre-ordered MoTU they were working on having that effect be the darkvision effect, and the goggles would have only have been for races that did not get darkvision (I don't know about low-light vision). Unfortunately there was a side-effect of players being able to see hidden/invisible mobs, which was Very Bad and they went to just the goggles, and those only working in the Underdark.

On a slightly related note, they have also said that game engine limitations only allow 7 light sources per area, which is why they can't have character-portable light sources (torches and such). Although it used to be that the Favored Soul's shoulder archon cast light kind of like a torch, but they turned that off because it apparently caused "performance issues"

Oh, really? That is horrible. Thanks for the info. I hate the purple haze affect in Wheelon quest.

Thanks for the info. I am happy that they tried it out. I won't be spending time in the Underdark at the cost of my eye slot. Sad, I wanted to really map out that area and not just portal/run to the quest.

There's nothing stopping you. Adjust your brightness settings a bit and have at it. Personally I don't adjust mine any at all and it's not terribly dark in there. The undersun goggles are fun and great for toggling on/off to really see branching pathways etc that you *might* miss otherwise. But you hardly need to wear them at all times. Heck, there aren't any respawns in that wilderness zone, so just clear an area, pop on the goggles and map your heart away and hotbar into your real goggles should you need to do a little combat. It's not exactly a showstopper.

You can run around in the underdark just fine without the goggles. Every one of my 18 characters have hit all the explores and opened the map up. If it is too dark just fiddle with your brightness. The goggles can be useful for spotting the bad guys when running around, and then you can just swap to your fighting goggles while you close range. I wound up with Drow Smoke Goggles on almost every character anyway.

It doesn't help quite so much in ALL the Shadowfell related quests, but in the quest 'What Goes Up' when the purple haze of the shadowfell combines with the glare off the ice/snow it can become quite incapacitating. I ran off the edge several times before someone clued me in to an awesome workaround up there. If you go to the advanced graphics options and toggle off the Post Processing video effects then it becomes much easier to deal with. I.E. runnning off the edge at that point is your own fault.

    Tips

This item is obtained from Beli Bragason (Optics Merchant) in The Underdark.

Good luck finding him, someone near one of the entrances last I encountered him...

He's between the entrance from/to the King's Forest and the entrance to SSchindylryn, IIRC.
