Someone was offering to trade astral shards for otto's boxes. Basically the deal was that he would join your guild with a dummy toon and buy whatever airship amenity you needed, and in exchange you would give him items. Is this permitted?

Don't see why it wouldn't be permitted.
Turbine has always been aggressively hands-off when it comes to player/player trades, with a "sucks to be you" response if you get ripped off. This sounds creative and lucrative for both sides, to me. So long as both parties got what they agreed upon and walked away happy, I say trade well struck.
I guess it's a good way to move all those duped AS from player to (almost) player. Quite clever really.
I'm pretty sure the only thing Turbine frowns upon is trading something in game for something out of game. If everything on both sides of a trade is in game then Turbine's already received its cut and doesn't care.
...and now you know why that +1 Dagger is on the ASAH for Xk Shards...
I would still like to see... Something that tests character versatility and player adaptability rather than character focus strength and quest knowledge.I play the quests for the content of the quests not just as an XP/min merry-go-round.Actual play experience is worth infinitely more than theorycrafting...
both types of items are acquired within ddo (e.g. store, ingame, dupe), there should be no problem exchanging these, even if there is not direct way (e.g. trade window) to do it.
Don't think I have ever seen anything official from Turbine other than the using outside parties to trade in game.
My guess is that is perfectly fine, I also guess that the Shards are / were duped as if they had the funds to get enough shards to buy any amenity you wanted they probably had the funds to get a box.
Then again I suppose it's possible they just made them on the exchange trading desired items / mats as well.
In the end though it's buyer beware. I don't think there is anything Turbine can or would do if he took the box and gave you nothing or if you got him to buy the amenities and gave him nothing in return.
PSSSST
You.... yeah, YOU. Come over here a sec. Wanna buy a gold watch?
It might be a real gold watch, or it might not. The question is, even if it is real, should you be concerned about the origins of the watch?
"When asked if the developers hate the players, as they make so many challenging jumping puzzles, their response was that they have what they consider a “… normal amount of contempt for the players.” This is good. A dungeon master should always nurse a healthy contempt for his or her players."
