    Default Eldrich Knight dillema

    Been thinking of making sorcerer using the Eldrich Knight tree. But I'm not entirely sure about this. For race I'm split between Purple Dragon Knight to use Cha for damage, or an elf/drow. If I went with elf I'd probably get the dex to damage enhancement (eventually), while if I went with drow it'd be to get higher dex and cha while still having an okay starting Str.

    For attributes (before racial modifiers) I'm considering

    Str 14
    Dex 16
    Con 12
    Int 10
    Wis 8
    Cha 16

    Although if I went Drow I'd probably do 18 Charisma and put nothing in Int, while using the racial bonuses to get dex and Int to 16 and 10 respectively.

    My question would then be as follows: What spells should I take? The stat boosting spells are in general a waste of time I know. The low wisdom I was planning on getting around via the Forceful Personality feat, especially if I go with purple dragon knight. But I'm not sure if I should build for buffs that improve survivability, arcane offensive capability, or a mix between the two.

    toss in Bard with your Sorc and 2 Pally

    Different Tack: Choose One:
    • Smooth Flourishes: You get Charisma to Damage with weapon attacks Single Weapon Fighting.
    • Swift Strikes: You get Dexterity to Damage with weapon attacks while Single Weapon Fighting.
    • Two Steps Ahead: You get Intelligence to Damage with weapon attacks Single Weapon Fighting.

    tier 3 enhancement from swashbuckling....

    and PDK has the same.

    Way to make an effective character is to limit the number of primary stats. By going PDK Sorc Bard you only have two primary stats - CHR and CON...

    Just an off the top of my head suggestion.

    Uhm, doesn't actually answer my question. By tinkering around I think I've come up with a solid build stat, feat, and enhancement wise for the different races I'm considering. But which spells would be best? And right now I'm leaning more towards purple dragon knight so I can be running around in full plate, possibly with tower shield. Would have to test if I can negate the tower shield's spell failure.

    Don't bards have to have a non-lawful alignment? While paladins need to be Lawful Good. Which is the same reason why you can't be a druidic paladin. You know, since druids have to be neutral. or how barbarians I think need to be chaotic. That said, half elves can take paladin as their dilly feat, then spend AP to improve the bonus and get additional paladin effects. But then that's probably not what the intention had been.

    Yes, I was needling Uurlock there, as "make a bard / pally!" is something of a running joke / common mistake on the forums.

    Paladins must be lawful good, monks must be lawful, bards & barbs must be non-lawful, and druids must be at least partially neutral.

    All of which can limit your build options depending on alignment chosen. And none of which answer the question I originally asked:

    What spells should I take if I'm making an eldrich knight sorcerer?

    Sorry if that was difficult to read. I've experimented a bit with using only buff spells, but it proved less then satisfactory. Actually, it proved to have extreme difficulty in Sunken Sewer (Hard) at level 7, and trouble handling Normal difficulty too. Since this would be a first life build, gear will be 'catch as I can', and I think I have a solid attribute layout for each prospective race for this character. It's just the spell list I'm not sure about.

    Without seeing the rest of your build, it's hard to say what spells to take. What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Are you building for DC casting?

    It's a FIRST LIFE build, so no tomes unless I can find them. No specific gear from raids I've never ran, starting at level 1 and moving onwards. Probably mostly solo since my home server seems mostly dead when I log in most times.

    The build would be for the Eldrich Knight enhancement tree, so a melee centric sorcerer. Presumably one who uses magic to enhance ability to melee, but my experiments with doing solely buff spells was falling flat. Race is a tossup between making a Purple Dragon Knight, Elf, or Drow. Although I'm not dead set on any of those. PDK would have lower Str, most likely and try to cap charisma, then take advantage of the T1 PDK enhancement to use Str or Cha for to-hit and damage. Drow or elf I'd be tempted to invest in the weapon line then snag dex to damage. Maybe not though.

    For feats I'm sure I want power attack, and maybe cleave. Then shield mastery/improved shield mastery would be a likely be a good thing. No, I don't care about being able to solo epic elite. Nor do I raid all the time. Actually, I've never done a single raid. So hitting the absolute cap for spell DCs and AC isn't vital. Being able to handle heroic through elite (maybe but not required) and possibly epic normal would be good enough for me. Then again, since I may never see any of the raid gear I'd probably never get a character to a stage most consider 'barely acceptable' for epic elite.

    As the OP mentions, my initial planned attributes (before factoring in any racials) would roughly be.
    Str 14
    Dex 16
    Con 12
    Int 10
    Wis 8
    Cha 16

    Technically, I've never flagged for any of the raids. I'm currently stalled flagging for Black Abbot for example due to nobody being willing to join me on the preceding crypt missions that pretty much require a second player for various reasons. Same for the 3rd quest before you can try VON. And can't even find the quests to flag for demon queen.

    Just as a side note, most of the builds I've seen on the forums over the years focus on the following things: Gear, Past Lives, Tomes, Skills, Feats, and now Enhancements. Few consider things like which spells to take as a sorcerer, bard, or favored soul. I guess this is because your spells are impacted in large part by your prestige. An air savant is unlikely to take acid spells for example while a fire savant would ignore water/cold spells. Then there's a handful that to me seem mandatory like Detect Secret Doors, Knock, and Resist Energies.

    If I was making a fire savant for instance I'd know I want the following spells:
    1: burning hands (prob replace with Jump though), detect secret doors, shield (or night shield), magic missile
    2: scorching ray, knock, scorch, resist energies
    3: fireball, chain missile, protection from energies, ? (not decided yet since it hasn't come up)

    You know, spells for my savant element and something for when foes are immune to that element. That and some utility. For eldrich knight I know Web would probably be useful. Heck, a lot more useful then it is on my fire savant sorc at least. But beyond that, no clue what would synergize best with a melee combatant sorcerer. Do you load up only on buffs, crowd control, and things to make you less squishy? Do you take some offensive magic for a ranged punch? A mix of the two? I don't know.

    Keep an eye out for spells with no somatic component. They will not be affected by arcane spell failure.

    I would recommend

    Jump
    Blur
    Heroism
    Haste
    Displacement
    Magic Missile
    Stone Skin
    Invisibility
    Wall of Fire
    Chain Missile
    Tensers Transformation
    True seeing
    Power Words
    Greater Heroism
    Knock
    Dimension Door

    Eldricth Knight is going to give you force spell power. I would focus on that as your primary attack spells To be used as range attacks, and get all the buffing spells you can get. You will be meleeing for your primary attack. I like great sword for the pdk with a shield sla. And it would be very hard not to take 2 pali levels for the huge save increase. That would let you get 16 to con and drop the 16 dex.. Self heals and hit points will be your big concern soloing.

    If going pure sorcerer you will need to branch out into one of the savants or get a whole lot of PDK enhancements. As to the highest level spells they are a bit scant on buffs so look for no saves like power words and utilities like Greater Teleport and maybe a summon.

    I dont like web so much for a mele. You have to go stand by them any way. You will want to be in power attack with a great sword spamming cleave great cleave and eldricth cleave. you will want a weapon fighting line.. like two handed fighting ind the improved and greater variants. you will want improved critical slashing there aren't many feats left over to help on casting. 2 extra feats. (with one fighter level from starting pdk) so not much dc casting and giving nukes a decent dc.. You have to play as a mele basicly and the best class for it is honestly Bladeforged self healing then becomes no problem. The damage wont be as quite as tasty but you can with your palidin levels get divine might from the Knight of the chalice tree to help out quite a bit.

    You are aware that Eldrich Knight can get Tenser's Transformation as a toggle at level 12, right? Not sure of the initial cost to activate it, but you could toggle it on then wait for the SP to recover before entering dungeons.

    yes definately Tensers from EK is is superior to casting it. Just threw it out there incase you were thinking of picking up 6 fighter or pali for thier T-5 enhancements. I dint catch what class level split you were planning.

    This is the build I used only battle sorc. This was U23 build and there are some things I would change now, like dropping toughness from the 2 level monk feat and taking PA there and taking Adamantine or Mithral armor (at least). Still don't know how I would go about getting ASF down under 10% with the point spread, though it should get -15% or so from EK. Maybe gear and one point from EK. into BF ASF if it has it. I know WF does. I did try every savant and acid worked best for me, with water/air a close second (until epics). Spells just seem to go kurplunk afterward and you either have to choose to focus on melee sustainibility or spell power and casting. I focused more on melee as you can tell. Here is my gear as of then that I can recall: I'm not good with remember names of some gear, but I can tell you where it comes from.

    Weapon(s): TF Rapier, Mutineerer, (Turpelent Epee-heroics), or I did go IC Slash, TF Bastard, First Blood, Balizarde (has keen) at one time.
    Offhand: Libram of Silver Magic
    Armor: TF Docent
    Boots: Epic Boots of the Rock.
    Back: Epic Cloak of Ice (I switched to this near the end of raids/dunguons when spell points where low and I couldn't cast off fire shield. To busy to scroll it).
    Boots: Epic Boots of the Innocent

    That's all I can remember to give you an idea, but I had lots. Guard procs are great. I know I had enough by 27 that I was doing 60-100 dmg per hit.
    The fighting style is actually simple. Lay down Cloudkill/Acid Rain, cast DM, kills. Put acid arrow on longer fights. Firewall as back up. I like it this actually and want to return to it one day.

    Default 1st Lift Battle Sorc?

    Alright, I'm going to assume that this is just for Heroic content, and you will be doing something else before you try epics. In that case -- I'd suggest focusing on the 'Battle' part of your Sorc and viewing your spell-casting ability as a buff and occasional DPS bonus.

    Why not try a Fighter 8/Sorc 12 mix? WF so you can heal yourself. Go high on Str and Con, and middling on Cha.

    Fighter Feats: Weapon Focus, THF, Wepaon Spec, Gr Cleave, Greater Weapon Focus
    Base Feats: Adamantine Body, Power Attack, Cleave, Imp Crit, Extend, ITHF, GTHF

    Get all eight fighter levels first, then 12 sorc levels. Smash things with the biggest THF weapon you can lay your hands upon.
    At level 12, be at Tier 5 of the Kensai tree and grab Keen Edge.
    Spend the rest of your points as desired in WF and Eldritch Knight trees.

    As a first life, what stats would you do? I don't have any characters who have true reincarnated even once. As such I'm limited to a 32 point build (28 point for drow). Also don't have a bunch of tomes laying around. I'd have to splurge on a supreme ability tome from the store. Mostly due to having horrible luck. I've been playing since the game first launched, and I've seen exactly two tome drops. One was a character bound +1 Int I got after two months after buying a +4 supreme ability tome for my main, and the other was a Skill: Swimming upgrade (+1 to +2).

    I usually prefer doing single class. If I did an iconic for the build, then naturally it'd be 1 level of that iconic's default class too.

    The big advantage that EK5 has is the toggle for Tenser's - something you don't need if you're primarily that class. I'm running a full wizard 20 right now and while I intend to smack things most often, I'll be T5 in something other than EK.

    Sorcs are low on feats and are the true caster. I wouldn't make a first life sorc battle caster. I advise you to go wizard. It'd be a lot simpler and easier to learn. This build actually needs fighter/monk/cleric/fvs/wizard/artificer past lifes to make it really work as intended.

    I would suggest going warforged/bladeforged (is better) if you have them. If not, just roll a human or drow.

    16 wizard/1 rog/ 3 bard.

    R/B/B/B/Wizard to 20.

    Start stats-32 pt build
    Int-17
    con-16
    str-13
    cha-12

    SWFx3 Levels 1, 12, 18
    Shield Masteryx2 Lvl 1 and when fit 15 maybe (hard doing this in head)
    Power Attack 3
    Cleave 6
    IC Pierce lvl 9

    Wizard feats
    Maximize- 5 wiz
    Extend 1 wiz
    Quicken- 10 wiz
    Heighten- 15 wiz

    Take Two steps ahead and skirmisher and swashing (double strike is nice if you can fit it with human damg)
    Human- 1 dmg boost
    Just the necessaries from EK. Don't perma tensor, just take spell. Put everything else in Archmage.

    Otherwise, 18 wiz/2 pally for Lich and swinging 2hander would be great too. Different build scheme though, maybe better even, but the first would be fun. 18/2 Rog stick builds are fun too.

    Huh, I hadn't actually considered bladeforged. And yeah, I got them. I have all the iconics. The self healing probably would be an asset. *goes to hammer out a test build* Huh, this could be interesting. What ratio of sorc/pal would work best, I wonder? Going 6/14 would let me completely negate spell failure from adamantine body, and possibly from heavy steel shields too. Should I delve heavily into Bladeforged racials or not... Hmm... Thinking Eldrich Knight/Sacred Defender. Don't use Sacred Defender much, I usually prefer using Knight of the Chalice on paladins.
