    Question The classic evasio barb?

    Ok, so now I would like to TR my 2nd life monk into a barbarian for the barbarian past life. I have never played a barb before, and since my main is a cleric, I have come to hate barbs. No other class requires as much babysitting and is as much of a mana sponge as the barb. Because of that, I would like my barb to have evasion and be self healing. I've never built or played a barb before, so I can't claim to have clue of what I'm doing. I quickly threw together a build with the outdated planner, and here's my idea. If you have suggestions on a different multiclass, or different feats, etc, I'd gladly hear it.

    I am just finishing a Barbarian life with a very similar build, only I opted for trapping skills instead of UMD. If I had to do it again, I would probably go the UMD route too. Please share your experiences with this as you move forward .

    There are two things with your feat selection I would do differently. First and foremost I would move up Improved Critical. Level 15 is very late, and Imp. Crit. really does a lot for your damage output. I would probably take it at lvl 9 and move the THF feats down.
    Second thing is Hamstring. I think Imp Trip or Stunning Blow would do more for you, but that is more of a preference thing I guess .

    Regarding gearing, you have to be very watchful of your defenses. You can maintain a reasonable ref-save, but it will take some work. The new Riposte VIII bracers at lvl 15 made a world of difference to me. Try to keep blurry and updated dodge items, and you should be alright. At some point you might be getting better defenses overall by swapping from light to cloth armor, to get your dodge up.

    I had a ton of fun with mine, and I am sure you will with yours too . Enjoy!

    You could always go 9 barbarian / 9 arty / 2 rogue and use repeaters and good umd. This was the easiest self healing barb life I ever did.

    thank you for your advice. I will have another look at my build and feat selections. And yes, I think getting my ref save high enough to matter will be a bit tricky maybe.

    On the blur thing, my toon has perma blur on her gs hp goggles. I also have the mabar cloak lvl 4, 12 and 16.

    I will keep that in mind. I've yet to play a bow/ crossbow toon as well. (basically I enjoy end game a lot, so I don't TR much). I don't think I want to do that with my 1st barb, though. But it's an idea.

    with ur 2 int & cha tome

    dump whatever, raise int and cha to 14, this way u'll be always maxing search and disable device (and have a higher chance with cha skills,umd mostly)

    from 7 and further put the 0,5 skill points in UMD

    take 2nd rogue lvl at lvl 13, put lots a points in UMD (after the 1 in search and dd) this way ur search and disable will be at 17, and UMD at 16,5

    get some +6 cha item, and 2 items 1 with some equipment bonus to cha skills/umd and other with some enhancement bonus to cha/umd skills and from 13 and further will have almost no fail on heal scrolls

    that is much more useful than having evade at 7 or a bit more str/con base

    btw 18 barb-2 rogue > 9-9-2 whatever unless u go wf and use spells, only via survivability-thanks-to-spells u would compensate the loss of dps (however the life will take much more to finish than the brute way)

    if you're worried about the traps in von5 don't worry, i use to skip it every life, not gonna sit waiting for hours to get 50k when in same time can get more

    to push ur reflex get a parasitic breastplate and craft uncanny awareness on it, don't waste points/feats on reflex/dex, u have uncanny dodge and gh to push ur reflex (however the 2 rogue's aren't for evade mainly, are for the skills) out of reflex you'll only get ac from dex
    psykopeta is finally baconpletionist because there isn't anything to delay it more - thelanis, where the gimps claim to be pros and noobs claim to be pros, no newbies allowed(unless they claim to be pros), we have enough drama w/o them.     Than you for your reply. I think you're missing what kind of toon I'm trying to build. I want:
    1. dps
    2. survivability and self healing.

    I don't plan to do traps at all, if you look at my build plan you see that I didn't put any skill points in dd or search. I have a trapper wizard that I do traps with, this guy is just gonna be dps, not traps. And von5? I don't usually run von5 til epic level, for a lovely first time bonus.

    Also, I may note that I hate soloing. I either join lfm's, friends, or put up my own lfm. I will starts solo, as I don't like waiting either, but usually someone joins me before I finish.

    Ok, rearranged the feats a bit, sticking to my first idea of 18str-12dex-18con human

    As I understand it, umd for healing will be less valuable on the higher levels when you will be raged all the time. But, it's still usable for self buffing etc.

    I wonder if people confuse mana sponge with healing up. Barb is a great class if you look beyond the damage you do to yourself and see how a DPS barb can dish out a ton of damage. Using frenzy and death frenzy is +6 to str, so as long as DPS is > than heals, its a good trade off. Front melee will take damage and usually the brunt of the damage. There are ways to decrease you taking damage, but you would have to rely on clickies, pots, caster buffs, evasion or *gulp investing in umd. The problem with umd and barbs is that you can't be raged to use it. Rage is what separates barbs from other melee classes and, depending on your investment, increases your dps and hp. You only get so many rages depending on investment and they last "x" time depending on con and investment. I personally don't waste the points on it and instead learned to play smarter and learned to take care of my own healing with just pots. You do come across some players that won't heal you because of all the frenzying and taking damage from mobs, so you learn to be self sufficient and realize that those players really don't know much about barb dps. There are of course some that have trouble with this and give barbs a bad rep, but that just means they aren't very good at playing a barb.

    Another option is to just use normal frenzy most of the time and save death frenzy for bosses.

    I'm working on a halfling Bbn 18/Rog 2 build right. Taking the TWF chain with PA/Cleave/GC and Imp Crit. Going to max Dex and save enhancement bonuses along with a good chunk of Occult Slayer. All points into Strength but shouldn't be too hard to hit 30 Dex, give or take tomes. Not the most DPS but should improve survivability and the more ability to deal with casters.

    I won't do traps but I'll max UMD and I put a few points into Open Locks just for lulz.

    I have been playing my cleric for 2 years. In those 2 years, I've only seen a handful barbs that were doing more dps than they were taking or low and behold, didn't need babysitting to not die. And a toon that needs constant healing to not die, is a mana sponge.

    Sorry didn't have a lot of time earlier, but this is something similar to what I did on my barbarian lives and I think it fits ideally with what you want to do...Great reflex and evasion, great DPS (all ranged) with xbow, endless fuselage and manyshot when off timer, self healing and best of all +10HP each life

Tbh, I do have arti, but Ive been avoiding any kind of ranged like the plague. I will play ranged at some point, but do I want to do it now with this toon? You're also in even more unfamiliar terrotory now, I have no idea how to build a good ranged toon.

    Granted, I have no idea how you want to spend your AP. But if I was doing a Human barb, I'd want the heal amp from the racial tree. And while you're up there, you might as well grab GH SLA. UMD is still nice, though.

    Depends on what you want to do, but if you want a DPS barb, you will sacrifice survivability and self healing as rage prevents scroll healing and spell casting. I have done barb lives on all my toons (21 total) and it just plain sucks unless you want to level handcuffed to a hireling. Dismissing rage to heal is a pain and a waste. If you want to go melee with that same build although, you can switch str and dex as str will only be your to hit since you will be using insightful damage. DPS will go down dramtically though and you will still have a tough time self healing.

    the best thing about barb is that it is placed highest on the list of original classes when they are in alphabetical order. which means doing a 7 barb 7 whatever 6 something else build will still give a barb past life.

    so if you really dont want to play a barb you can do 7 arti 6 rogue mechanic repeater build and still get the barb pl, or 7 rogue 6 ranger helf AA, or 9 druid 2rogue 9 barb self healing melee

    even 9 sorc 2 fvs 9 barb shiradi MM spammer
