From the Release notes: Tome Upgrades can now be found in random treasure. These wondrous items will allow you to upgrade an existing inherent bonus in an ability score to the next higher inherent bonus. Upgrades that turn a +4 Inherent Bonus into a +5 Inherent Bonus will be able to be found in treasure levels of 27 and higher.

Explain to my how this upgrade is any different than receiving the tome itself. If I have a +2 tome and recieve a +3 tome upgrade, how is that any different than receiving a +3 tome?

If you have used a +2 tome and get a +3 to +4 upgrade tome, you need to first use a +3 tome.

If you have eaten a +2 tome and receive a +4-+5 upgrade, you can't use it. You will need to receive a +2-+3 upgrade, +3-+4 upgrade and then the +5 one.

    Yay! I got a +3 to +4 upgrade tome of <stat I want>!

Oh wait. I only have a +2 tome of <stat I want> on this character.

But hark! Look at my Character Sheet! When I hover over my <stat I want>, it says I can buy the missing tome I need in the store! I am saved!

Because you can, apparently, get an upgrade tome in a lower level chest than a full time of the higher level.

They better left the drop rate of normal tomes unchanged,
or else there will be a ****storm.

Sounds like a way to bleed more money out of us. Does that mean you can't even use a +2 now unless you first ate a +1? If that's the case, that's kind of crappy. I always had bad luck pulling tomes, so I just broke down and bought the +3's for my main stats. If I had to buy a +1 and +2 first before using the +3, I'd be way LESS likely to spend the money on it. Very user unfriendly and greedy move on Turbine's part. They should rethink this.

Actually, what you should do, is stop eating tomes.
Although they pack a lot of fiber, they are supposed to be read.

    That's not what it means.

The requirement is only for the "upgrade tomes".

If you have +1 inherent bonus to one ability score, you could use a +4 tome on that ability score, but you could only use a "+1 to +2 upgrade" tome.

I have a feeling the upgrade tomes have better chances of droping than the tomes. I can see the situation in which someone gets a +3 to +4 upgrade and then feels tempted to get a +2 to +3 in the store...

No. Upgrade tomes and regular tomes are totally different. You can still eat a +2 without eating a +1. Its really not that bad of a change
Heck, it's not even a change, its an ADDITION. And IMO, its not that bad at all. Certainly much better than just putting +4s in the DDO Store.

This is a typical financial artist's bait move. Kinda a carrot dangling in front of the horse thing.

That's actually pretty brilliant marketting. All my characters are bathed in +2 tomes, but I don't have that many +3 tomes... If I got that +3 to +4.... yeah, that could work on me if the cost was 500TP or under lol.

It's an addition unless someone decided to replace X% of tome drops with upgrade tome drops.

    Would you do that? No.
    Would I do that? No.
Would you put it past Turbine to do that...?

According to a dev (Feather of Sun IRC), the upgrade tome replaces a regular tome. i.e. doing vale quests and a tome comes up, there is now a 75% chance that it is a +2 tome and a 25% chance that it a +2 to +3 upgrade tome. The dev also stated that the chance of pulling a tome was 1 in 443, and with this update it has been changed to 1 in 333. If you look at the drop rate change:

Old system after 1300 chest pulls: 3 +2 tomes
    New system after 1300 chest pulls: 3 +2 tomes, 1 +2 to +3 upgrade

Overall I think a decent change.
