Default 6ranger/2rog/12paladin GTWF build! need opinions!

The idea for this build has been lingering in my head forever, i really want to make it. but the low lvls may be very hard for some. but with good gear this build could be great. i choose drow because atm it has stat bonuses to 2/5 stats needed for this build. cha, dex, which are much needed for this. the ranger tempest prestige makes it hit a ton faster and better with TWF, the paladin tank prestige helps with the buffs it gives that increase AC, aswell as the defensive stances tht increase con + str by 3. which helps a ton aswell. a rage item is useful on this build aswell. but remember, the stance dispells any rage effects. the rams might spell does stack with both rage and the stances. a +6 con item and a +6 str and dex item would do this build good. CHA item is optional but is much recomended if you wnt a good lay on hands heal. wands would be used for self heals with this build. and evasion is a bonus that will work with the buffed stats from spells/items/abilities and all that. please leave CONSTRUCTIVE critisizm. no mean stuff please. this is just a build i think could be fun to play. PS. toughness cn be switched for khopesh prof. if its that important to someone. other then tht. i recomend scimys though khopeshs are better IMHO.

The build can ressurect, self-buff, heal, and do good damage with paladin abilities. also, has good hp. so a +6 con item is recomended to help with them baddies. the AC shld be good with this due to the decent dex bonus and the increases to armour dex bonuses from the tempest and tank prestige. have fun

Sounds like a fun build. Fun should be a priority to your build. Bother all that optimization talk.

If your main focus is melee, then you would be better off skipping Tempest I and taking paladin to at least 14 levels for Zeal. Tempest I requires 3 whole feats that individually provide you with very little benefit, in exchange for a 5% higher offhand proc rate. Since offhand attacks only get half of your strength bonus added to their damage, that +5% proc rate is really only going to mean +3 or 4% to your damage output.

Contrast that with Zeal, which gives a 10% stacking chance to doublestrike with your main hand (with full str bonus to damage), and that spell alone gives you about 3x the DPS boost of Tempest I. And it doesn't cost you any feats, so that's 3 more feats you can spend on whatever you like, such a Power Attack to even further increase your melee ability.

And at that point, why are you really even taking the ranger levels? An 18/2 pally/rogue or pally/monk will be a considerably better melee, either at DPS or tanking.

I agree with the concept, but not the execution

First point is I dont agree with choosing drow (I never do actually, except on wiz/sorc). Drows looks like fugly overgrown smurfs, and a drow do not get enough free build points to make this concept work well.

Second point is way too low charisma. You want 14 base charisma as a bare minimum.

You do not take rogue as first level. Bad choice, you loose so many useful skillpoints that way. Rogue MUST be level one on this build.

I see you do not max out UMD skill. Bad bad bad bad baaaaaaaaaaaad mistake on your part. This character should easily reach 40ish UMD unbuffed. And you also need to max out concentration to avoid beeing interrupted when you heal yourself. Not maxing these two skills will cripple your character. Trust me.

I would choose ooman with these starting stats (32 points):
    STR 16
    DEX 15
    CON 14
    INT 10
    WIS 8
    CHA 14

The best char for this build would be an ooman on its 3rd life

I agree - back in the day, Tempest was so worth it for the +10% melee alacrity and the +2 untyped AC bonus. Now that they've shifted all the benefit to Tempest2 but left the cost at Tempest1, it's not a wise purchase.

Still, Spring Attack is pretty nifty - if you didn't have to take Dodge and Mobility, Tempest1 would be worth it.

Thankfully, Ranger6 brings a lot more than Tempest1. TWF + iTWF, ManyShot, Bow Strength, Ram's Might, Jump/Camo, skill points, reflex+fort saves, Diehard (it's nice when it's free), 2 Favored Enemies w/ +6 damage to them.

Enhancements: Your choice of Paladin PrE, but I recommend Hunter of the Dead until you get better geared.
I do think, however, that you'd be better off with 12 cleric instead of Paladin.

you are aware, WIS is REQUIRED to cast any ranger/paladin spells >,> 8 wont cut it. and my paladin lvl 14 runs with 12cha and uses a +6 item and has no problem healing 200+ on his lay on hands.

A Wisdom item counts toward the requirement for wisdom. A charisma item does not count towards the requirement for Divine Might.

With a Charisma of 14, you can get Divine Might 2 with a +2 tome. Besides, a paladin gets more from charisma than just Lay On Hands.

actually an 8 would cut it... it doesn't have to be a natural score in order to cast spells... it's a score that includes items tomes.. whatever.....

to cast any spell you need a 10 + the level of the spell ... so for lvl 4 ranger ... or paladin spells... you would need a 14 to cast the highest level of the spells

starting with an 8 wisdom.... 8 +6 item.... that already =14 enough to cast the highest level spells you can cast... add in a +2 tome and your at 16... +2 guild buff 18... now your already well above what you "need" in order to cast ... starting with an 8 wisdom is a perfectly viable way to go on either a ranger or a paladin .... in ddo

now if this was pen and paper... it would be a completely different story.

Your point has been answered more than adequately above, by players who are aware of more than you about DDO

Raising wisdom above 8 on creation on a ranger/paladin is wasting valuable build points.

    Still no UMD or concentration?

Believe me when I say that maxing out those two skills is going to make a world of difference to your character.

His version in the planner doesnt have the enhancements added or tome usage, which explains the disparity in the HP totals. I am pretty sure he has a little experience with endgame front line melees, and what the HP requirements are.

Well, if wands and no concentration is enough for you at lvl 20 then go ahead

    Default Since no UMD/DD/OL/Search/Spot

There is no reason for rogue....other than not having access to Monk.

You get an extra feat, WIZ bonus to AC on top of the DEX bonus and better saves, while still getting evasion.

It's a fun build, my sig toon was the fastest toon I ever level'd to 20, but am having a seriously hard time finding the gear for the AC and DPS that I want him to have, but part of that is my limited play time due to work/RL issues.

Good luck, but I would consider the monk splash instead of the rogue since you seem to only be using it for Evasion and Tumble.

Actually, since you took Toughness twice, your build will have 22 more HP than the one I posted. I personally find feats to be worth far more than 22 HP, but it's your build. However, spending 3 feats to get a 10% more offhand attacks, but not getting Power Attack seems a little backward. I'd say your 2nd Toughness should be swapped for Power Attack.

I'd swap Favored Enemy: Chaotic Outsider for Evil Outsider - you get more that way. Monstrous Humanoid is OK, I guess - I've found that Elementals are typically more prevalent and a pain than MH.

I'd also switch Improved Crit: Slashing for Piercing, seeing as you get racial enhancements to rapiers and short swords.

UMD isn't a need - it's a convenience. A very powerful, versatile convenience that is worth making a few sacrifices for. Instead of spending spell points to heal yourself for ~40 HP, or whipping a wand like a epileptic conductor, or using one of your LOH, you can hit a heal scroll once and done.

If your cleric didn't fail concentration checks, he either had Quicken on 24/7, or never played challenging content. If that's your choice, that's fine - I enjoy pwning lower level content myself.

Not really - I have tons of experience with endgame front line battlecasters, though

the build requires tempest plus. every one says its not worht the 3 feat loss. if you look at it you actualy dont loose any feats, from being 6 ranger you are given more then 3 feats such as some needed ones anyway like TWF and ITWF which leaves you only using 1 feat anyway. plus diehard which occasionaly is a party saver, also many shot, bow str, rapid shot, making the build relativly good at hitting enemies that arent the most reachable, also gives you gives you +2 dex from action pt spending added with teh other +2 from elven dex. so with tempest your gaining a lot more then ur spending. well worth it and its permenent it doesnt have to be cast like the lvl 14 paladins pell. i do not use UMD alot. the build cn ressurect as it is and if needed it cn take waay teh soverign host and isntead take the elven bonus thingy which gives a free rez every 10 minutes. paladin only gets +2 skill pts a lvl. so all of tht would have to go UMD should i attempt to max it out. it all depends on playing style. and whts good for you may nt always be good for others.
