    Default Assassination not going off?

Has anyone else noticed on your assassin, hitting an assassinate, and it just doesnt do a **** thing?

I sneak up behind a mob, I'm behind it. It's not active, its not targeting me. I hit the assassinate button. I swing. I hit. Twice (dual wielding). I do damage.

I never see anything in the combat log about assassinating.

Now, this isnt all the time, sometimes it works. But about 50% of the time it just seems like it doesnt do a **** thing. No 'you did an assassinate but it failed' - just nothing, like I did a normal attack.

I thought it might have to do with fortification - but I still did sneak attack damage on the hit.

If they MAKE their save, do you not see any message about an assassination attempt? Its the only thing I can think of...

If you swing and it shows nothing, it might be lag. Your screen shows you in weapon range, but the computer's record of where the mob and you are is different and shows them outside of range. I've skulked around Menechtarun and tried assassinating gnolls on patrol and the assassination going off without a roll usually happens right before I see the gnoll change direction and begin walking off. The display on the client end is running behind the server's game-state data.

EDIT: I should add that many monsters have high saves and many will begin to hear you when you get in range. With many, you have under a second to hit the assassinate before the computer registers that they've detected you. You don't see it yet, but the server's data is that they heard you and are looking for you, hence, they won't get assassinated.

    (Spelling edit, oops.)

Except that I already said I do damage. I just dont get the ASSASSINATE.

And its not a matter of being detected. If I were detected, it'd start looking for me. And even IF it's looking for me, I STILL land a sneak attack because it's not TARGETING me.

Try it, get a mob to detect you and hit it. You still sneak attack it.

I was going nuts over the same issue. Then I figured out the cause: You have to actually target the mob to assassinate it. Soft-targeting isn't enough(Even if it is highlighted and in the focus window), and you'll only get normal damage rolls. It nearly drove me crazy until I caught on to what was happening. I've since learned to tab then assassinate.

I considered that, and tried it. It didnt work. BUT - It was a mob I tried to assassinate, then ran away while it was blind, and once it calmed down, I snuck back up this time tab-targeting it. So maybe it didnt work because it was previously aware of me. I'll try it some more.

What sucks is in the old targeting system, you didnt need to target - dual wielding I could sneak up to two adjacent mobs and assassinate them both. Seems thats impossible now.

I'll give it a shot and see if that fixes it for me. Thanks for the input.

Actively selecting isn't necessary. I've been using auto-target and assassinate works fine that way.

As far as getting damage, but no message, I think it works like Assassin III or vorpal. You only get a message if you actually hit with it. If not, no message and the attack is as normal.

Just a followup - I was mistaken about sneak attacking an active mob searching for you even if it cant see you, it doesnt work, although it SHOULD. Fighting you and blind = sneak attacks. Not yet fighting you, but cant see you because you're hiding = none. It should be the same. Mob cant see you... sneak attack.

You can do it with soft/no targeting. In fact that is the only way you can pull off the double assassinate! Boya!

After effing with it all day, I'm pretty sure you ONLY get a message when successful.

Wrong stance, mob sees you, cant sneak attack, mob makes save - no info.

Kinda sucks, but, it is what it is.
