Since your a fighter I would definately where the heavy plate unless you are planning to have hig dexterity. By high I mean above 14 dexterity.

    Default The armor penalty applies

to skills that are affected by armor.....ie jump, swim, balance, move silently, tumble etc. basically any skill that encompasses movement to work is affected by armor penalty as the heavier/bulkier the armor, the harder is it to perform those skills that require you to move.

It applies that negative to all STR and DEX based skills. You can check your skill sheet to see what each skill is based on. As stated before the armor of choise is completly depended on your dex. Choose what ever armor give you the most AC with Dex.

As a fighter the only skill that the armor check penelty(ACP) will affect is your swim which affects how long you can hold you breath and how fast you can swim. If you going underwater and you dont have underwater breathing item, you should strip down.

The stronger the magic on the item the less the penelty will be, Master Work and +1 armor will have one less ACP then regular armor of the same type. The patters follow for each + you gain you also loose another ACP in addition to the higher AC granted by +1 though +5.

Armor can also have a mirthril property that increases the dex bonus and lowers the ACP.

The armor check penalty for swimming is double the number associated with the armor.

Heavy Plate: -7 to tumble, jump, etc., and -14 to swim

Also, this penalty stacks with the armor check penalty on shields, if you carry one.

He is a TWF... meaning he sports a 15+ dex, ultimately even a str built TWF fighter ends up with 20-24 dex dressed ... as such mith FP is typical, mith BP or CS ... some str based twf builds are even donning icy's all depends how high dex fills out... Dex 30 is the cut-over to outfits/robes, and that is lowering a tad with higher level AC bracers.

To the OP: armour check penalty is modifier to Str and Dex based skills. I've not played any pre-set characters in game so do not know your stats off-hand, I always build my own - customized from scratch. My guess would be you're fine in either... place the armour on and see what your numbers are yourself. My main character, is an old stregth based human level 20 pure fighter(kensei) TWF, she wears mostly mith FP in battle though carries a few sets of mith Chain Shirts, I think I still have some demon scale in bank from DQ....
