1rogue/6ranger is the template to versatility, ac, traps, and dps. There are many ways to go from there.
Kensai, frenzied berserker, tempest, knight of the chalice builds all work well as pures or 18/2 splits.
Casting classes, well, mod 9 doesn't have anything that makes them stand out.
