Essence of Cleansing

How exactly is this item used? Can one cleanse a tier two upgrade or only use it on a tier three?
It would be a shame to mess up and waste this item.

I successfully clensed a tier 3 item with a high energy cell and the clensing item in the alter of devestation. I think you can clense any tier of item.

I would suggest upgrading the item you want to keep then cleanse it, however I did have an item that was cleansed and it only had tier one upgrade. I just had to make sure I didn't mess anything up in tier two or three

So if you cleanse an item at say tier II and later upgrade it to tier III it remains cleansed? Just want to make sure.
