but, what is guild housing? Is it as simple as the name describes... a place for each guild to call home? What enhancements would it bring to the game?

I couldnt agree more. What the heck is guild housing, what purpose does it serve. A room where you can stand around and look at other guildies? What other funtions will guild housing serve?
What a waste of dev time, they should add more content and races versus guild housing IMO.
In DDO a group of 6 (or perhaps 12) work together to achieve a single group goal (usually quest completion) over short time durations.
Guild Housing is a mechanic for a group (perhaps larger than 12) to acheive multiple goals (progressed collectively) over longer time durations.
It provides large numbers of players with time consuming group oriented goals to acheive. That is ... it gives us something to do.
Guild housing can also be thought of as a kind of "Union Hall", with possible features like these and others:
1). private message boards
2). additional private inventory space
3). communal inventory space (for sharing or selling for guild funds)
4). links to major areas in Stormreach (Houses, etc)
5). guild-wide chat while in "hall"
and many others.

One thing that is often assumed when using the term guild housing is the idea of guild banking (i.e., a place to store stuff/money that can be accessed directly by other guild members.)
Maybe I'm missing something here, but wouldn't #2 be covered by more House K favor. #4 I personally think is already covered be the fact that Stormreach is really small. I don't really want to enter a place just so I can go somewhere else. Doesn't #5 already exist in the Guild Chat feature?
So far I see benefits being, #1. Which I think most people already have between in-game mail and guild websites, and #3 which I cant really argue against, until you let that one person into the guild who cleans out the bank.
I hope there is something else here that I'm missing cause I really don't want devs using resources on this when they could be using them on much better things.

If they do as it was in LOTRO, it gave you the equivalent of a guild bank, which meant you could store stuff other guildies could use and have acces to, even when you weren't on.
It also gave you a private place to hold meetings, and you could show off trophies as well.
