Note1: By the monster manual, Elementals generally have HD about twice their CR. Outsiders, such as Devils and Eladrins, have HD about CR +/-2.
Note2: Apparently, Air Essences below Strong do not exist in DDO.

A warning: Many outsiders like Devils and Eladrins have Spell Resistance. To avoid wasting Kyber Shards, be sure to pick up a Spell Penetration VIII item before casting Trap the Soul on them, and hire an assistant to club it with Shattermantle. Whenever possible, target a no-SR outsider of the desired alignment, such as an Efreet instead of a Devil.

I'm trying to think if there are any "summoned" Air Elementals that might be <CR:10. I don't think so. We really only saw air eles in Mod3 in L10+ quests.

Can you put 50 tiny to get 10 small? or 10 small for 4 average?

The machine will convert:
1000 Fragments -> 10 Tiny
100 Tiny -> 20 Small
10 Small -> 4 Average

50 Tiny to 10 Small does not appear to work. Also note that high-level chests drop fragments in stacks of average 500.

It's for getting trapped soul gems and for use in the adamantine ritual.
If I am not mistaken they go into the altars of change only, not the other ones.

Invisible Stalker, perhaps? I don't know their HD, but they are close to a 1:1 CR to HD ratio and there are a couple CR 10 stalkers in Tomb of the Shadow King. They may fit on the HD 20 version of Trap the Soul

now we know what it takes to get the trap the soul spell to work, wow.

after having done all the quests out there a few times, even some elite. And after having cleared the vale a few times, I have a grand total of 621 khyber dragon shards.

wow. Really wish I had selected another spell. What a complete waste of a slot for my wiz. bummer.

funny thing is, my sorc is the one with all the spell pen. I figure at this rate, sometime next year I will have enough shards to cast the high level version (30 HD) only to find it will not work in the elite mobs I encounter like the running devils as they probably ahve more than 30HD..

* The Soul Essense gems produced by Trap the Soul can be placed on the Auction House, but they do not go into any category and cannot be viewed or bidded.

* A Celestial Hound (CR <1) produces no soul gem. According to the pattern, it should output a Weak Essense of the Saint (or whatever name attaches to Neutral Good outsiders)

I didn't want to waste my shards on a strong earth essence. That question wasn't interesting enough for me to spend a very limited component, at this point in time.

It's true, they should stack more both in main inventory, and inside ingredients bags.
However, you can avoid wasting bank space by bringing them to the Eldritch Machine each time you get 1000 fragments. Convert them into 10 Tiny Shards immediately, then keep them in your ingredient bag. That's very manageable.

Negative levels do not allow spells like Daze Monster, Insta-death Cloudkill, Circle of Death, etc. to work. Negative levels also do not change the HD part of the formula for Intimidation or Diplomacy. In another thread someone (Ghoste I think) mentioned that they tried to trap the soul of a Huge Earth Elemental (HD higher than 10) and the enervation method didn't work for making a weak soul gem.

Edit: The CR 10 invisible stalker has 11 HD. They should work find to make medium air soul gems.

Man, I don't know about the rest of you but this is gonna be a huge grind to get the components I need for this spell given the current drop rate. As was discussed, even the Devs are dissappointed with that. I hope it changes soon. I have pulled a total of 6...YES 6!!! Kyber DS fragments...but I have 852 Syberys DS fragments. I have one character flagged for the shroud and 3 more well on their way. At this rate I'll be able to cast this spell on a HD20 (since the 10's don't work in the device) sometime next year.

6600 so far... however I wasted a thousand trapping low level earthies before I realized I needed the 20 HD variation.

This number is from two guys at about 10 full loot runs through the vale.. with donations from guildies who are tired of hearing me complain my blue dragonscale got broken.
