Smile DDOGamer: Wizards of the Coast Distances Itself From DDO

Is this WotC diss of DDO meaningful? It's clearly disrespectful.

-> But does it mean anything?

    I guess it's just a lawyers issue.

WoTC is selling their stuff to multiple parties and probably is reluctant, either spiritually or contractually, to promote two competitors in the same breath.

Think they just don't want to mess with the minds of those kiddo's that play Neverwinter, We in DDO are plenty adjusted to confusedness, with all the depth ad different systems we have

I actually kind of understand their thinking on this. The stuff they are promoting is not Temple of Elemental Evil. It's a new storyline that involves Elemental Evil. I don't know any details about it, but i can see how they might be looking at it.

It's like when Hollywood reboots a storyline or character. They don't necessarily tie themselves in to the past versions. If they mention other products, it's usually only those that tie in directly with their current version. Think of maybe the Batman Dark Knight reboot. They released games that directly related to that and they were promoted that way. If another, unrelated Batman game was released at the same time, they might not affiliate themselves with it, because though it may have sprung from the same source, it wasn't tied directly to their specific version of it.

Now maybe they could have mentioned it, but i wouldn't read more into the lack of mention than what they actually said.

Okay this is overblown, I get the concern but don't freak out.

    Trevor Kidd (WotC):
The product list and the press release are about the products that align with the upcoming/new EE story. We definitely...love the stuff that ddo is doing with classic Temple of EE, but we didn't want to confuse it with the new story.

Had he hashtagged ddo...would you have felt better?

They have to draw a line between 5th Ed. Elemental Evil and 1st ED Temple of Elemental Evil. They aren't just redoing it...it's a whole new storyline. DDO gets to play with the original, the #1 fan selected module in D&D history and Neverwinter gets the new storyline, because Neverwinter is directly set in the new storylines.

We are 1st - 3.5 edition players, Neverwinter is 4th and 5th ed players. Different storylines, different players. So when they promote New 5th edition things, they aren't going to mention DDO because it would be confusion for the masses. If they promote DDO in that mix and new players show up and our ToEE is different from 5th edition, you'll get a bunch of really upset players.

Take a breather...DDO got some nice kudos for what they are doing.

It's always been this way. WotC never really abandoned any previous edition of D&D. They updated the modules, futzed with the rules and promoted the new stuff, but they only once tried to make everyone get on the same page version-wise (until Pathfinder b-slapped them) and will gladly make a buck selling or licensing the old material. If some vice-idiot at Hasbro decides their branding is at risk this may change, but for now let us view this supposed slight as an opportunity.

What you can do is retweet his love of what ddo is doing and tag it yourself ^^

This was a very good thing...WoTC loves our awesome Turbine creatives...celebrate it!

We were for the most part left out of Tyranny of Dragons also.

But isn't DDO like 100 years in the past from the current FR storyline anyway?

I'm sure WoTC realizes which side of their bread has more butter.
(That would be the NWO side btw)
I'm sure Perfect World would not be so very happy if WoTC started using tweets about their tie-in to promote the other guys.

    What can you do?
We are still the red headed step child.
    No biggie.
    Nothing has changed.

I'm sure if DDO /rolled well on initiative we could have a tie-in of our own for something else.

This is more-or-less correct; our upcoming update is based in the original module, not the Forgotten Realms story that will be going on in other D&D properties.

The exact times vary a bit by quest line, but our Forgotten Realms content takes place around the same time as the current Forgotten Realms timeline. Some things are a little earlier (such as Thunderholme, which set the stage for the Tyranny of Dragons storyline) while others are a little closer (such as Mask of Deception, which is around the same time as the Tyranny storyline).

So really Cyndor, (lesser god of time, infinity and continuity...Complete Divine 3.5) is having an acid trip and time is moving where ever it wants whenever it wants.

They aren't distancing themselves from DDO. They are promoting the new story and didn't include DDO because it is publishing an online version of the classic story.

It actually seems like a reasonable explanation to me. Thanks for bringing it up with them though, maybe it will encourage a few people to try DDO so they can experience the old story.
