I'm both of these things. I think its great. Its really, really hard to get new players on board when they have such a pay mountain to climb particularly with expansions in the mix. I've got FIVE new people into or back into this game over the last few months, this will mean they stay. They will get the expansions that are on offer and *will* buy the ones that aren't as soon as they can afford it, because its not such a huge ask now.
The game will be better, and have a longer life for that. I paid all that money, I don't want to see the game die, this is still an investment for me and it hurts me not at all. That money is already spent and could have evaporated any time anyway in terms of 'value' if the game closed, and I've enjoyed all that content when its come out and every time I've run it since. So... new players get to run it with me now without me having to spend money on passes for them or them having to find money they might not have to play what is now old content. And all indications are that content is going to continue to spill out of SSG, particularly if they have a bigger player base with faith that they'll be treated well.
And nothing SSG have done over the last 3 months has suggested anything other than love for the players.
So as a premium player who owns everything and who recently went VIP when the game was ostensibly free to all over the last few months purely because I want the game to live during these awful, awful times and into the future (also those 10 extra bank slots were nice), I *applaud* them.
I can't speak for other premium players or VIPs, but that's how *I* feel.
I really don't know enough about this to comment on what was promised.
But all those wider benefits still apply, and I would guess (and it is a guess) that most season holders not only were well off enough to be able to afford for their pass to suddenly become worthless if the game died, but also clearly are invested enough in the game and community and have enjoyed the benefits of their season pass for long enough that they would see the sense in welcoming a sudden influx of new players sticking now on a level playing field in terms of access. That's more groups, more raids, more guildies more everything without barriers to everyone.
And it only applies to end august. Which tells you it's aimed at rewarding loyal existing players who don't have the full catalogue but have stuck with SSG, generating loyalty within the recent influx by not suddenly pulling the rug out from under them and leaving them with a grind and cash mountain to climb (which really would be cynical), and means those new players are way more likley to buy new content when it comes out, sustaining the game. VIPs who are struggling to maintain ongoing payments in the wake of the current economic situation even get to breathe a sigh of relief - maybe they get to stop their sub for a bit, having supported the game for years and years... but not actually have to just stop playing cos they also can't afford to buy that content.
So y'know. I just don't see how this can be a bad thing, except from a 'why did they get something I had to pay for' perspective which right now? In these times? I understand that mentality less than I ever did. There are times that is a legit concern, but that kind of attitude applied as an ideological red line in a situation like this with a game this small... surefire way to destroy what you love.
