Announcing something for in an hour is scraping the edge of unscheduledness.

It's "scheduled" if we purposefully brought the servers down, as opposed to "the servers have unexpectedly fallen on their faces and we're trying to snap them out of it". :)

Nah, just say you "schedule" random crashes to keep the server admins on their toes, kinda like a random fire drill that empties a school or business in the middle of everything. :p

Sure would be nice if they fixed the Lolth animation at that point in the quest also. Where at the end of the sequence her half-body rises like 50 feet in the air. It's been that way since like the second patch after MotU.

I understand the way you're using the word and it's completely valid, but most people aren't going to interpret it that way. To most "scheduled" downtime means downtime which is planned ahead of time. Thus it has been "scheduled" in advance. It would be better just to leave that word out as it implies to many players that the downtime has been planned well in advance and Turbine either failed to properly inform its players or chose not to inform its players.

Again, as I said before, Tolero's definition is completely valid. I'm not arguing that. However, it could definitely be clearer since the phrase can be misinterpretted. Whether Turbine is using the correct technical definition is irrelevant. It's better to use a phrasing that cannot be misinterpreted and is as clear as possible.

To many "scheduled" means planned well in advance. I'm not saying it's techinically the right definition, but it's the way many people interpret the word since often times a "scheduled" event in real life is one that is planned well ahead of time. (ex. we "schedule" an interview, we "schedule" a doctor's appointment, we "schedule" a basketball game, ect.)

Have you any clue what SOON even means? Here is a page for some really good self education to "bring reality to life":
http://www.wowwiki.com/Soon

On a serious note dev's, from a legal standpoint your use of saying "scheduled" (omg, scheduled in inverted commas?!) 1 hour ahead of a supposed 2 hour downtime is fine, but clearly to many of your users it's use is very ambiguous and now, from a professional standpoint, should be avoided exactly to prevent a large degree if different interpretations from occurring.

In layman's terms, put more effort into thinking before saying something and you are much less likely to trip over a bag that you had put down yourselves.

Layman terms ppl. How about we apologize for the downtime. We have have a hotfix...No abuse of the word schedule, very customer friendly, and you will have less complaints. You need to face it anyway you look at it , it is not scheduled...regaurdless if it was a crash, hotfix, or update. Just apologize and tell us what it is about rather then force feeding us schedule. Sorry guys about the hotfix had some issues in the Rift and making sure every1 gets their raiders box. Makes it so less irritating not seeing scheduled in that. Anyway thanks for letting us know

11-14-2013, 11:32 AM
I understand what you guys (Turbine) mean by scheduled, and it may well be that you only had confirmation that the servers would be coming down when you made the announcement.

However, I would bet that you suspected a possibility of it happening quite a while in advance, and we would really appreciate it if you could advise us of Suspected Scheduled Downtime instead of just Confirmed Scheduled Downtime, because such short notice that we've been getting recently is very disruptive.

They 'scheduled' the downtime and then told you about it. Whether that is 2 weeks, 2 days, 2 hours or 2 minutes before the servers go off-line, makes no difference. Scheduled means what it means (really!), and the definition really isn't up for interpretation.

I view this more as, people will complain about anything.

Actually I don't even complain about that sematics, I am just upset that I come home from school, decide to finally relax and play a little and BOOM SUPRISE HOPE YOU LIKE IT. I had no expectation of that yesterday and it would have been nice to know that a day 'ahead of time'

Also aside from the goodies wich I appreciate as well Turbine have very frequently used that word in similar context of downtimes being announced with very short notice. Or more accurately; It would be nice to be given an hour notice after you guys come in and notice that there is a downtime on the schedule to be done for hotfixes.

Or someone who makes that call should be the one pinging everyone who would make that announcement, and or make that announcement.

However, at the same time, said hat may not have the sole responsibility, and the person who truly does never can make the announcement for security reasons, or there is a group and you can't make the announcement until everyone is there to weigh in (measuring the importance of the hotfixes).

I guess a fix for that would be to have the priority for the fix, or assign one that automatically bypasses the vote protocols; if it is a pri0 or 1 hotfix, as soon as it passes test, schedule and make an announcement. If pri 2 or lower (higher numerically), no need to announce, perhaps just push to patch schedule.

Where I work its called "controlled" or "uncontrolled"
If the service is down because we brought it down on purpose, it is a controlled event.

It was planned in advance, a developer even mentioned in a previous post that they were going to have a fix for it 'soon'.

The idea of a schedule includes the idea of being planned in advance, it also includes the idea of being announced in advanced, like update 20 was announced in advanced. This downtime wasn't announced in advance therefore it wasn't, in any definition that doesn't include irony, scheduled.

....Is more than just the use of the word 'Scheduled'. So you scheduled it and let the staff and developers know but didn't let the user community know. So the root of the issue, and why I think people complain about it, is the lack of respect for and communication with the player base.

I will be adding this to the Known Issues shortly. Spies in the House is currently not able to be completed on Epic Hard and Epic Elite difficulty. You should be able to complete it on Epic normal or Heroic difficulties. We'll work on a fix for this for a future update.

Okay, and how about A Small Problem, which also cannot be completed on Epic Elite?

....Is more than just the use of the word 'Scheduled'. So you scheduled it and let the staff and developers know but didn't let the user community know. So the root of the issue, and why I think people complain about it, is the lack of respect for and communication with the player base.

The announcement was made to the community within minutes of it being approved in-house, so no, there was no letting staff and developers know but not informing the community. Seriously, though, folks, let's move beyond discussing the definition of the word "Scheduled", it's not really all that relevant. The key issue is that we inform you as quickly as we can, which we did in this case. We could have waited to push the hotfix live, but felt that the fix to Beyond the Rift was important to get out as soon as possible, and today's window made for the best time to do it, so we messaged everyone and proceeded.

I'm happy it got done.

Splitting hair over words aside.

I work in the industry, and I agree with Cordovan on this. If they tell us about a maintenance window, it is, in fact, scheduled. Prior notice is not really as much a part of this, unless there is a contract with governing SLAs.

As Cordovan stated, the only way it wouldn't be scheduled is if the servers became unavailable (outage) on their own accord, without Turbine intervention.

Cordovan and team: thank you for all that you do!

My only wish is that you'd CC that info to the Calendar. Updates, Patches, Hotfixes, Events, ... to me, there NO reason that CCing the Calendar for announcements like that isn't part of your SOP. I'd like to be able to take a quick look at the Calendar and see if anything important is up.

Holy ****... *mind blown* There's a calendar (https://www.ddo.com/forums/calendar.php)on the forums?!?!?! In 7+ years I've never noticed that until I just went looking for it... Oh look,November is blank, and the other months don't fare much better. Guess I wasn't missing much this whole time.

Thanks Jerry and thanks to the team for the Rift fix and the prompt delivery of the Reward Box!

Sorry you have to deal with such asinine threads like this one today.

Really makes you wonder about people.

Great idea Orge but you cannot expect people to read that when they cannot even read the launcher that is right in front of them...

I think they should individually text us when the servers are about to go down.

And not some impersonal mass-text, but something nice and customized for each of us. Maybe talking about our characters a little bit or complimenting us on the shiny loot we've recently acquired.

And maybe send flowers too? And cake? (mmm....cake!) And tasty hams? Yes, they should definitely schedule some tasty hams...

But seriously, thanks for the timely updates and fixes! :) Keep up the good work!

Thank you Cordovan and rest of the Turbine team for quick fix of delivering boxes.

I said it before in another thread, some people can never be pleased, and they will complain no matter what you do for them so don't worry about it and enjoy the completion of update 20 ;)

UPDATE 12:25 PM Eastern: The worlds have reopened, and we'll see you in-game!

The DDO Game Servers will be brought down on Thursday, November 14th from 11:00 - 1:00 PM Eastern (-5 GMT) for a hotfix. Thanks for your patience, and we'll see you back in the game soon!

First, thanks for keeping the game working :)

Second, did some of Feather's item adjustments go through with this hotfix? I'm specifically curious about how spell focus augments will be stacking with other items. If so, I need to get on that! Thanks :)

Seriously guys Cords right, get over it, it doesn't matter and you guys are flipping out about it and than you wonder why the devs stop talking to us after a while and legitimate complaints and awesome suggestions get lost in the shuffle
