View Full Version : XP vs Extreme Repetition

Recently I have been running Stormcleave alot, and I started to noticed that the XP began to reduce and eventually I was capped at about 499xp for the quest on a lvl8 toon on elite, and in the xp log it was saying a was capped due to extreme repetition.
Now I assumed that some timer was counting how many times I did the quest over a certain amount of time, so I stopped running it for a week. Didn't change.
So I stopped for a bit longer approximately 2 weeks. I leveled my toon from lvl8 to 9 in this span on other quests, but it still didn't change.
So I quit running it, just last night I was helping a friend through and noticed my xp was back up and my count for the quest was at zero.
What are the rules and mechanics governing how xp vs. number of times ran work, and how does it reset?
Any help would be appreciated, I am fairly new only been on for the last 3 months and am a very casual player, but this aspect has me baffled.

Quest repetition is permanent. If you farm a quest for XP you can end up with no XP. The exception is completing a quest for the first time on each difficulty level. You can run a quest 12 times on Normal, get down to no XP, then run on Hard and Elite for full XP (first time only).

more than likely you ran the quest on a difficulty you never ran it before, it acts like you never run it before when you do it on a difficulty you never did before...
but the times through a quest dont go down, its to keep people from farming a quest for XP until repetitions gone, then wait a few weeks and farm it again because they dont want to do other quests with that char.

Now that I think about it, that was probably the first and only time I have ever run that quest on normal....makes sense thanks for the insight.

Quest repetition is not on a timer. It simply counts the number of times a toon has run the quest.
Example:
Stormcleve Normal - 1st run (get a +25% bonus for first norm run): 5000xpStormcleve Normal - 2nd run (no bonus): 4000xp
Stormcleve Normal - 3rd run (no bonus): 4000xp
Stormcleve Normal - 4th run (no bonus): -10% for repating quest 3600xp
Stormcleve Normal - 5th run (no bonus): -20% for repating quest 3200xp
Now, when you run it the first time hard or elite, you get another bonus FOR THAT FIRST TIME ONLY.
Stormcleve Normal - 6th run (hard): +25% for first time hard 5000xp
Stormcleve Normal - 7th run (hard): -30% 2800xp
Stormcleve Normal - 8th run (norm): -40% 2400xp
Stormcleve Normal - 9th run (elite): +50% for first time elite 6000xp
Stormcleve Normal - 10th run (elite): -50% 2000xp
Stormcleve Normal - 11th run (elite): -60% 1600xp
etc.
the one thing my simplified math does nat take into account, is that the base xp of a quest is a little bit higher on hard and elite, so rather than the 4000 base xp I used for easy math, hard is base 4400 and elite 4800 I think.
i hope this helped.

Yep, that's what it was.
The maximum XP you can get out of a quest is to run it 12 times on Elite, then once on Normal and once on Hard.
The biggest thing I don't like about this mechanic is that on most quests once you hit Extreme Repetition a single death will wipe out all XP and many times will even leave you in debt.

After 10 times, you will be flagged under extreme repetition, and that flag never gets removed (typically). The only thing on a counter is your looting ability in that quest. The more times you repeat the quest over a 7 day period the worse the loot gets. After 10 times in under a week you begin to get nothing for ransacking that chest within a week's time.
However, there have been instances where repetition counters did managed to get reset, and I think this has been corrected by now. When a server crashed or a major update occurred, or server maintenance happened, on occasion some counters would get reset (for xp purposes). Something occurred to the database or a major database change happened. The merger could have possibly caused this for some people. It sound like you hit the xp repetition flag prior to the merge and after the merge you are getting better xp now, which could explain what has happened (if this timing happens to be the case). If so, enjoy what you can out of it, but the xp repetition counter is intended to never go away, once you do something 10 times, the xp becomes capped.
Although as someone else said, if you cap out on xp on a quest but havent actually done all 3 difficulties then you will get more xp the first time you run a difficulty you have never done before, but that's a one time thing.

The others have given the math...now I'll give the advice...just don't do it.
there is a lot of interesting content out there at each level. Run things once on norm, hard, elite, and then find somethign else to do. There is more content at each level than you need to level up. Why rob yourself of half the content in the game by only running 3 things to death?

I am not saying that I don't do other content, just that on my cleric around the 8th-9th lvl it seems that every PUG I join is either Stormcleave or the Vons. My questions was simply because I saw an XP reduction and I was curious how it worked.

Because you need the other half to have something interesting to do with your first alt. ;)

this is actually wrong kinda, i did pop 12 times , on the 12th it became capped , now i had not done normal or hard before the xp cap for repetition, when i decided to it was still caped. now it said first time bonus but it still was capped , soooooo.....i missed out on tons of xp there cause i always ran it elite for the loot!
