View Full Version : The original Malice is now dead.

For 10 years, I have been trying to get the name Malice in an MMO. Malice is a popular name and is always taken within minutes of a game server opening. I finally got lucky in DDO. In beta I had the name. When the headstart event started, I already had the game downloaded and I was logged in within seconds of the servers opening. Tried Khyber. Already taken (are you serious?). Tried another server. Already taken (you gotta be kidding me!). Tried Xoriat. SUCCESS!

So Xoriat became my home and I began levelling the Dwarven battle cleric named Malice, guild leader of Legion which would eventually become one of the premier guilds on the Xoriat server. For some dumb reason, I counted on Turbine to raise the level cap beyond 10 before I could reach that lofty height. For an equally dumb reason, I made my battle cleric 8/2 cleric/fighter.

Malice was a mean, self-buffing little bastage that could fight and heal with the best of them. For a long time, however, he was a cleric without raise dead and a level cap raise was nowhere in sight. I began to get frustrated and one day, before they introduced 1750 favor rewards, I rerolled Malice and quickly levelled him to 9/1. When 1750 favor came out I had already eaten a +2 Tome and had several pieces of raid loot. Rerolling again would have netted me +2 Reflex Save so it simply wasn't worth it.

Regardless, the current incarnation of Malice apparently wasn't old enough. Whoever took my name on Thelanis (or maybe it was Tharashk...they both had Malices) made his toon and never rerolled. Along came Turbine's poorly-instituted server merge and, suddenly, the name I had been trying to get for 10 years became Malice-Xoriat. I put up an LFM asking if anyone knew if the guy that got my name still played. After an hour or so I received a tell explaining that Malice had been active since headstart and still plays most evenings.

I've been looking for the guy since the merge and have yet to see him. I figured I'd offer him some uber in-game items or maybe like $100 cash for his name and I'd pay for his premium rename. I was never really too confident that he would play along anyways and he doesn't seem to play very often.

Does this person have his own guild? Nope. Has he accomplished even a fraction of the things my character has? Probably not. Does he even play a fraction of the time I do? Most assuredly not. Does he deserve to have the name more than me? Personally (and a LOT or people have backed me up on this so far) I'd say no. Does he have 11 pieces of raid loot? I'm guessing no. Has he paid Turbine as much money as I have? Let's see...2 accounts in AC for over 7 years plus 2 accounts in DDO...I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess no.

Do I have any sort of leg to stand on? Certainly not.

Turbine has given those of us renamed by the merge the consolation prize of a free name change. Great! Only now the game is a year and a half old, we now have 3 servers merged into one, and Turbine NEVER purges inactive accounts or names so guess what? There are no names left that I want. I have tried 50 since the merge and they have all been taken. My brother's account had a mule that I named a long time ago and last night I finally got sick enough of -Xoriat that I decided it would suffice.

To those that know me, Malice is now Urich. Thank you for all the random tells I have received from various guilds, friends, and enemies expressing condolences. It is very much appreciated.

Malice is dead. Long live Malice! (The real one, not the guy who has the name now. :p )

Urich, eh...?

Well, I have to give kudos for snagging a name that sounds decent. I tried several names for my "Quintan" before finally giving up. He has plenty of raid loot, uber bound items, etc...but I hate having that -Tharashk by his name, so I'm just deleting him out of sheer frustration.

Unlike you, I happened to meet the Quintan from Xoriat, and he seemed a pretty damned good player. So, at least I can kill my guy with the confidence that there's a Quintan out there that can live up to the name.

I thought you were playing Jundak a lot lately. Now it's coming together. and strating to make sense.

To those that lost your names, my sympathies.

Sorry for the mix-up and even more so that you lost your name.

I do have some sympathy, it kind of sucks to have to change your character name once you have it established. There is no "fair" system to resolve the conflict because everyone has a different sense of what is "fair" and what entitles them to a given character name.

But I've got to say....

Why take such pride in a name that ever 13 year old from Soel to Istambul uses for an on-line character name? Why not stake out something truly different and original that you created yourself? Its hard to stake a claim on a name like Bob in the real world and in the online world stuff like Malice, Deathstalker, Doom are pretty much the same stuff as Tom, Susan, and John. You kind of have to get used to being just one in a crowd if you pick a name like that.

In other news...

I grouped with a guy from a small guild called Silver Waffles who had his server suffixed on it. Talk about your unexpected hyjack!

Well if his first name was Silver and his last was Waffles then it wouldn't be that surprising at all since they based it just off of first names. Now if his name was SilverWaffles as a first name then, holy namejack.

Depends on your point-of-view and how much you really want something...finally getting it, and then having it snatched away, Bro.

Regardless, he's ranting...and in the end, he took the high ground and found a name for his character and made sure that all of his friends knew where to find him. We all rant in RL. I wouldn't expect anything less from any of us here in the forums...besides, most everyone in RL would have no clue what the hell we're ranting about anyway.

No, Silver Waffles was the guild name, I don't recall his character name, so someone (I would guess the guild founder just dorking around on other servers) had made a Silver Waffles guild on Thelanis at some point.

I understand, and I do sympathise. No mater what it is, if you want it, you want it and he had gotten it and its taken away. That's worse than not getting it in the first place, but the other guy that had it would feel the same way. Thats the problem when everyone wants the same thing.

I guess I'm just offering the advice: Make a cool name of your own that is different and you won't get shafted like this.

/disagree

Solstice is my geek name since 1989, playing MERP and D&D with friends. Try create a Solstice as name, but think isn't a allowed name...
So, I create Solsticium as a variant (on latin and italian) of this name.

It's a name that you choose for ANY reason, and you keep because means something for you.

Sorry, Malice. My condolences :(

[Now, for you Turbine, imagine this: in a future (only time will tell) a new merge server arrives. Who lost a name now and create a other name will lost the new name again because have someone active and older that you? Think about that]

Kept all my names except one, roled a rogue tought Safe Breaker would be a nice name.Started him 1.5 to 2 months ago and just been playing him for a while, so the merge happen check my names Attila the Hun fighter 14 (old enough) Gaxpar Touch fgt 14(old enough) Tyeszu Olaxzum wiz 14 (no one stupid enough to have a name like that lol )Scalpel and Stitches Cleric 14 (old enough),but then the baby toon level 13 rogue 2100 some favor was now called Safe tharashk breaker :(.

First night after the merge run the Gianthold tor black dragon chest get a scale the ingot arcanum (the acid one ) and a black scale give the scale to a buddy give the named item to the caster in the group so im like cool got a tome for that run .We complete the quest . So i go to the mailbox and i compile tomes all on the same toon for trade purposes so i mail it to SAFE (but not safe-tharashk) lol ... mail the guy a letter that id like to get in touch but honnestly wasn't expecting much from this .

The day after a guy sends me a tell when i have an lfm up with safe-tharashk he says i have a mule called safe deposit >Im like cool but u have more senority with the name and i understand thats a policy to accomodate most of us so i need some time to come up with a new name. The guy answers its a level 2 mule and its been 3 days ur on the server and i see u on everyday i think u deserve the name more than my level 2 mule then we got in a party and talked about it .I was like this is cool so remember that tome i mailed he said i'll give it back to ya just come and get it, i was like dude the tome is no prob kep it as a token of appreciation .

So the next day i log on send him a tell after he has an lfm up on his level 2 mule resuming the situation send him a tell then no replies he logged out immediatly and he had already contacted a gm within 5 minutes a gm sent me a tell didn't know i was to be contacted, saying someone told me u wanted to change ur name i was like god yeah and he did .I even asked the gm a favor casue when i rolled the rogue i put small b on second name instead of big B i asked him if he could change it and he did.

So in the end there is some nice people out there and just saying if u guys communicate and have a little patience sometimes things can work out .

Thanks to Katts Novus via guild leader to change is mules name i really appreciate it .

Definately 100% cool of Katts. Grats Gax!

My problem here (it seems) is that some guy rolled a toon named Malice early on and pretty much quit. I did put in a GM ticket when I logged on and they simply gave me some canned response about using /changename to pick a new one. I am assuming their seniority system actually worked and they weren't blowing smoke when they said you had to have logged on within the last 60 days so I have to assume that one of the Malices is at least active enough to have been on in that period (probably for the loot weekend lol).

Anyways, yes. I was definately ranting. Yes, I definately feel like I got the shaft. Yes, I'm a big boy, I picked a new name and I intend to move on. I'm honestly suprised and appreciative that one of the above posters actually saw through the rant to the real reason for this post, however, and that is to let everyone know that I have a new toon name. Don't mail anything to Malice thinking it's me! ;)

Thanks.

As a real-life nerd who enjoys online games a little too much I completely understand the attachement to names. Wasn't part of the enjoyment behind the DnD world and by extension the online gaming world creating an imaginary extension of yourself to "experience" things unexperienceable in RL?

So, I would imagine, it is natural to get attached to our alter ego's names.

I feel your frustration. I jut hope you hadn't mailed any uber gear from another character to "Malice."

I did that to my low level wizard, cleaning up the bank space of my fighter who had been holding the wizard gear since the last loot weekend... I kept all my other names... except him... oh well the worst was the +6 int goggles, so not too bad.

I have had Grimmlock on tharashk server since the 2nd or 3rd week this game came out. I have rerolled him twice since then. I have seen people out there with names like Grimlock,Grimmlocke, Grimmlocck and so on. Does it bother me? no. Does it suck now that I have a name of Grimmlock-Tharashk? No its just something that happened. Will I rename him? No I think its pretty cool to have a name from a past server. I have not seen the person who has the other name on the new server yet but eventually we will cross paths. If they want to keep the name thats cool its his/her option not mine. The people I have run with know me and changing my name would cause a hassle. Oh you used to be him? blah, blah, blah. Other people will probably be like well I have had this name sine 1856 back when my grandfathers brother uncle's sister husband had it. They way I see it for those who lost the original name they had...sorry. Most of the players I know and run with the name does not define them, the way they play the game does. just a matter of everyone getting used to the new names if they decide to change it.

Wish I could think of something hateful, but I'm just too disgusted by the disregard these folkes have for common decency. Amazing that you guys think that you are "above the Hate" when you truly are the purveyors of all the things that we mock through our posts. Ironic, no?

For 10 years, I have been trying to get the name Malice in an MMO. ...Does he have 11 pieces of raid loot? ...

In the time honored tradition of picking points completely out of context - you only have 11 pieces of raid loot on that character? Noob!
