Default DPS warlock is my final build... now with racial completionist!

Good morning and hello all, I am Strimtom and today I come to you with warlock. But not just any warlock, mind you, but DPS focused warlock. I am aware that warlocks do no do as much damage as some of ther other casters (and definitely not as much damage as melee or ranged) but I really like ther versatility of warlocks and the added spell damage they get over some of they competitors along with access to crowd control and their non-reliance on spellpoints for damages. I recently got racial completionist on my character Strimstream and I really want to try this build as the highest DPS focus warlock I could make. If you want to see my findings, please check the following video:

    TL;DR
    1. It really works well for R10s and it has pretty decent damage.
    2. I would like to be able to get the DCs higher as sometimes monsters still make their saves, but I lose damage doing so.
    3. Being firebased with only a 5 second window to crack immunity every 10 seconds is super annoying and is making me consider going force/acid instead but that gearset isn't the best.
    4. If you have suggestions on how to optimize this build for more DPS or really in any way, please let me know as I am trying to gather as much feedback as possible to make this the strongest build I can. This item set is the first draft and I will be updating this post when I get more while archiving older sets.

*WARNING* This build uses RACIAL COMPLETIONIST and HEROIC COMPLETIONIST. If you do not have these things and still want to play warlock, I would check out This warlock build, Hardcore 1 Warlock, Hardcore 2 Warlock, or Hardcore 3 Warlock

Why not take empower spell at 28 instead of toughness for a little extra spell power and slight damage boost?

Looks solid. It looks like a revival of the old tier 5 SE / Capstone TS split that was popular a few years ago when warlock had better damage.

A few things to point out that I assume you already know
    1) A max-dps spec'd warlock is far behind single-target dps of a properly spec'd martial character. This is math - no amount of build creativity will change this unless there is an exploit I don't know about. It's still a liability in a dps role in raids, but certainly warlock can fill some raids roles well and is great at overall dungeon clearing.
    2) You definitely need 2 points spent on penetrating blast in tainted scholar. It's the only way to get around damage reduction on your base damage against several enemies - most notably golems. The fire immunity bypass from tiefling will help, but I see many things in your list I would drop to take penetrating blast. Unless wand and scroll mastery provides some dps boost like it used to with sorc I wouldn't bother with it at 30- although it's great for leveling.
    3) Currently max dps warlock at end-game is fey (sonic) with vivace, a high dc in fatesinger for the sonic vulnerability proc. Everything is changing with U51 so we will have to see where it lands in a few months. You might want to consider trying that out.
    4) In R10 utility spells are more important for warlock than dps since warlock dps lags behind top-tier dps builds significantly. I personally prefer devour the soul and a 2nd finger of death over the 30% crit boost for R10 and for raiding as warlock dps is weak-sauce when maxed out anyhow.
    5) Debuffing provides far more dps improvement than anything else for warlock - esp when soloing. Ash> leg resplendent fury, but resplendent fury the best option for someone without lgs.
    6) Mass Frog at 28 is a no-brainer currently. That is changing with U51 but even just for constructs and undead it's worth taking over toughness.
    7) I can provide the math, but arcane pulse is worth taking at 29 and will lower how long it takes to beat down a boss. Warlock has solid prr and mrr without deific warding. Arcane pulse isn't good for every caster, but warlock is an exception because dps is so low.

I would be interested in seeing how long it takes to beat down bruntsmash in R10 - would be great if you can stream that some time.

Because level 28 is an epic destiny feat, so I can't take empower. I was tempted to take Mass frog instead, but I was stress testing the build first.

I had wondered if I would use wand and scroll mastery and I definitely do not, so this is a good change. There are quite a few golems at end game as well so this works.

Is it worth losing 45% crit multi and dealing with evasion for a slight raid damage boost? I have found that I generally don't get to more than 1 or 2 stacks of the sonic vulnerbility on anything other than raid bosses, as even sometimes R10 bosses die too fast to get to max stacks. There is also the worry of improved evasion being really prevalent in sharn content that just doing half damage all the time seems a little sketchy. I haven't tried sonic for these reasons since it seems like a reasonable loss. Also not really having a strong energy burst or dragon breath hurts too.

Ash is in my loot list, I just need more LGS runs to finish up my pieces. Only 2 more to go! (I REALLY HATE LGS FARMING)

Do you have a link to that somewhere? I don't have any force spellpower or crit, so I would be hesitant to use arcane pulse. I'd be curious to see

Probably a while, as staying alive will be annoying. We'll see.

Thank you for the thoughtful feedback! A lot of good ideas here.

This is where the "art" in building is more important than the "science" as who you play with, playstyle and what you run are more important than the math. If your group is taking down bosses super fast it might not matter.

My testing indicates I get a 30% crit multiplier boost from draconic vs. 20% from vivace although vivace only applies to sonic damage where draconic boost applies to all damage. Fatesinger also gives boosts to spellpower which is fairly significant.

Since helpless mobs lose their dex bonus to reflex save I don't find evasion too problematic with mobs (at least when I was in fey last), but yes a boss with evasion and a high reflex save would be super challenging without a debuff.

Here is the math on arcane pulse fitting into a warlock rotation.

3d6 + 6 stacking 5 times doesn't sound super good as 15d6 +30 is only 142.5 damage per tick before multipliers for 8 ticks - a total of 1,140 single target damage for one cast every 15 seconds. The alternative would be one more eldritch blast. Eldritch blast at 20 is 6d6 base dice + 10d6 pact dice.
With the two epic feats, 4 pact dice from tainted scholar and 1 more 1d6 base dice from penetrating blast for a total of 14d6 base dice + 20d4pact dice for a total base damage before multipliers of 99. Eldritch blast benefits from 130% scaling with spellpower so this brings the total to 128.7. So one cast of arcane pulse with max stacks does the equivalent of nearly 9 eldritch blasts not including the extra 225 spellpower you get on arcane pulse with metamagic.

Due to animation speed issues I try to break eld blast as little as possible so I settled on a 15 second rotation where I apply another stack of arcane pulse, debuffs from soul eater (stricken and consume), any other warlock spells that fit in (for me greater ruin and greater creeping cold - both of which improve overall dps if added to the 15 second rotation).

Arcane pulse is definitely less useful without solid force spellpower. Force is also used with penetrating blast so it's good to have at least a force swap weapon for your off-hand when using that form. For myself arcane pulse, greater ruin, tentacles, arcane tempest all use force so it's important for me to slot. Since you don't have all of these I can see why force would be less of a priority.

Holding mobs removes the evasion part, and I haven't had much struggle with it. The extra spellpower in Fatesinger makes a huge difference, as well as the available gear. It's possible to achieve 100% crit rate on a sonic lock, and having access to disco ball and a no-fail stun is a huge boon. Bound/Grim fate is also incredibly helpful in raids.

That being said, while it can be fun to compare numbers, it's unlikely to be a massive difference. Playing a damage lock is still leagues behind. I found that my aoe damage was acceptable and I needed more single target for bosses, sonic lock does that for me. You're still playing a damage lock and you have to understand in group settings with any passable DPS you're going to be relegated to instakills/control/debuffing first and DPS second. I doubt that there's a massive difference in dps between Carceri storm, fey, goo, and fiend. Sonic for single target, carceri for single target, goo and fiend for aoe.

My favorite for soloing higher skulls is abyss. With middling gear on a first life I was able to solo higher LE reapers than I can on my sonic lock and it felt very easy, and the damage didn't feel all that different.

Either way, I've found some interesting things related to this class and damage. My full specced sonic lock with an excess of investment in power did not feel appreciably faster than my throwaway abyss lock as far as damage goes - my abyss lock was force and negative specced as far as focus goes, used arcane tempest and fan of shadowblades, and even vs undead it felt super similar to my sonic lock for questing. It feels like there's a point of significant diminishing returns and as long as you get all your stats in, excessive specialty for damage doesn't really scale in a way that pays off compared to the physical damage classes. It feels like you're fighting for every single gain but the gain doesn't pay off as much.

tl;dr very little reason to stress about absolute maximal damage this class can output. Play the flavor you want and you'll get 90% of the way there. Geared sonic lock takes around 50 seconds to kill r5 gardak. My numbers for other pacts with significantly less gear were not far off enough to justify the amount of work I've put into DPS lock.

You get racial ability points every third life of each racial reincarnation of each race I think..
So in reality he could have more.

    It's just Strimtom being Strimtom.
Haven't you heard Racial Completionist lets you spend Universal AP in class trees?
    Me neither.

The thing I don't get is that a lot of these builds are presented as if they were for inexperienced or less experienced players. But the requirements are those of a deeply advanced veteran who has pretty much run it all and done it all. It just strikes me as a bit weird.

Don't get me wrong, I find them interesting and I always enjoy seeing what he comes up with. But that's always the part that has left me scratching my head. I'd like to see something a little bit more in between. Meaning not for a 28-point bills but also not suggesting completionist Feats added.

It is supremely easy to get Evasion in the best tree for a Primal caster (fire/acid), so whether you choose Fiend or Old One, Primal Avatar is great. So, I would recommend Light over Medium Armor now.

I have worked out a slightly different build using Great Old One and Drow, I have my Racials done but not the classes, I would have 7 more lives to do, and ughh, maybe one day.

I use Feywild Dreamer, Mists Ravenloft set and a couple other items. I don't know why you think you can't get a decent Acid DPS, Primal offers Evasion and good Acid spells, I am sitting at 1172 before any Pots or temp buffs, of course you wrote this guide before the changes to EDs.

I would post my build but just get security token errors every time. I do have 93 CHA standing before temp buffs (includes guild bonus though), so before pots or whatever else. That's pretty close to my old build pre nerf. I can get into the low 90s for Frog and close to 100 for Enchant and Illusion, high 90s for Necro with temp buffs. It seems to work well, I have the build running with fewer past lives on an alt.

Agree Primal is underrated for caster in general. I could see T5 EA and T4 Primal as being optimal for most warlocks.

It isn't until you have written a guide that you realize how easy it is to no-brain something, particularly when you're writing from notes or a previous guide.

As an example I've written several EK guides while somehow forgetting that I often swap feats in the early to mid-teens to get armor proficiencies and I often use shields for specific fights. This makes them seem at times disjointed (like why do I take Arcane Fluidity in the build) when in fact it was just a quick sentence or two that would have explained why seemingly incongruous enhancements and feats were chosen.

I've only done a few of these and I frequently have to go back and edit to explain why a beginner build changes form as it morphs into a more experienced player build.

Strimtom has done probably dozens of these guids and so I give him the benefit of the doubt when something doesn't quite add up or seems a bit off. The odds are pretty good in each case that there is a line of thought that largely explains the discrepancy, however without the issue being brought to light it is invisible.

Unless wand and scroll mastery provides some dps boost like it used to with sorc I wouldn't bother with it at 30- although it's great for leveling.
He has Utterdark Blast which changes his force damage to evil. Against most things, it should do full damage. I don't think he needs it. Unless I am missing something, and I am more than willing to learn.
