Welcome all new players to DDO.
If you just started out and chose the default server you spawned on Orien. Congratulations, you are in a very fine place to start out.
Orien is one of the smallest servers in this game. It has advantages and disadvantages. I'd like to try to make it easier for you to start on my home server.
The biggest disadvantage is the low population and since you are expecting this to be an MMO you might be disappointed because you don't see much folk to group with.
Don't be discouraged. Make your pace and you will meet great people on your way because we actually have a nice community on Orien, especially for beginners.
All in all Orien is pretty PuG friendly, we need to do things cross-guild wise because of our low pop. And since we are helpful, as well don't be shy to join lfms without knowing people. Just tell them you are new and most will give you a hand in figuring out what's going on.
How to meet people?
There is the lfm window of course and the general chat.
Lfms show mostly quests on reaper difficulty. It can be intimidating at the start but it should work out if you run with a group. Apply to the group and say that you might need help in reaper and all is good.
The general chat is NOT a global chat. Lots of people don't know that and are wondering why no one answers there.
Therefor Orien has it's own established global chats. The most popular and helpful one is the Titan channel. It is THE best place to be ingame, if you want to dive into the community. You will find advice - good or bad -, trade, trivia fun and nerd talk of course.
There are other global chats like EEraids for example to organize Orien's raids. Have a look at post #2 on how to join those chats.
Another good place to be is the Orien (Raiding) Discord or short ORD. I used brackets around Raiding because the discord grew to so much more. It is a great place to be on- and offline, meet people, organize things, use the voicechannels (since the ingame voice and chat is lacking in function), trade, nerd talk, fool around. It is practically a merge from the ingame channels Titan and EEraids.
Most players join guilds. While it is not a must it certainly can be a good idea. We have a handful of guilds that always take on new players. Ask in the Titan channel or in ORD for an invite and someone will contact you in a short while. If you are looking for something specific, I personally might be able to help out since I like to know the guilds on Orien and have a good overview.
Orien got a lot of EU based players but we have a healthy US-time scene, as well. Now that hardcore is up all this is somewhat distorted. But there is a great tool out there to check if Orien is good and right for your time-zone: https://www.ddoaudit.com/servers/orien
I'd say our raid scene is healthy and some people even push raid difficulties but it certainly could use more people who like this kind of thing. We are not reaching the difficulty levels other servers do in general. Maybe the majority is more chillaxed or not as competitive. Don't take me wrong, we do have ambitious and genius players but we could always use more.
When you take your time to get to know the people on the server you will be able to connect to the right ones that suit your playstyle.
Last but not least what kind of community is Orien? I asked around and the majority agrees:
- friendly
- helpful
- informally
- chill
- generous
- close-knit
- lots of potential
Too much? Believe me, this is Orien. We might be small but we are mighty fine folks. Help us grow!
Cheers,
Titus
