Fastest way to get a (mainly) Cleric life?

I want a couple of cleric lives on a new character ahead of taking it into epics on a different class.

Some people have said doing an Iconic life is as fast as a Heroic one and gets you two benefits. Any suggestions/feedback on whether thats true or not and whether any particular build would be better/fastest for doing it? I'd quite like to play a caster cleric, possibly in death domain with mass inflicts but would do melee if it was going to be significantly easier/quicker. I don't have a huge amount of gear but enough to get by especially at high heroics/low epics. I’ll be mainly soloing and pugging as don’t have a regular party/guildies currently and my play time is too erratic anyway, grabbing the odd hour here and there.

Yes, I'm definitely interested in something similar (but probably with some non-necro support spells) but I'm trying to get a feel for whether that would be slow through epics compared to a melee/other type of caster cleric.
