Default Alchemist confirmed as next class

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2tReYJKdVk
    About 3:20 minutes in.

Cordovan confirmed it, apparently. I think we've pretty much known it was Alchemist for the last couple months, but it's nice to have confirmation.

If it's like the Pathfinder class, I'll like it.

Not sure why DDO isn't making a class from the game Dungeons and Dragons but ok. SSG makes odd decisions at times. Not saying bad decisions in this case, because I can't know exactly what Alchemist will be, but I do think it's odd.

    Interest is at zero unfortunately.

    1. Another class. Means another class to obtain and grind through before going back to my main class on my main for Heroic Completionist.
    2. Not really a class I'm interested in normally anyway.

    So yeah. No interest.

Yeah I always thought an alchemist would be a good enhancement tree for artificer, not an entire class by itself. Alchemist is more of a profession or job than a class.

I can't find anything on alchemist that isn't homebrew. So I guess they're looking at the pathfinder archetype and running it by WOTC to see if it's okay to use. I guess it will be some kind of grenade thrower/potion tosser/poisoner sort of thing. Sounds interesting, though.

Alchemist is 5th ed (or so), and my tabletop stopped half-way into 4th ed., so this is all new to me (and I'm guessing I'm not alone). So, for those like me, in a nutshell...

Alchemists fall into the "spell casters" category (altho' in description they don't "cast spells" - I'm guessing this distinction may be more important in tabletop). They have a limited "spell table" that is more like a Warlock's - they gain spell levels slowly (6 diff levels total), but I'm guessing those levels are more of a jump in power than your Wizard/Sorc spells.

    They have 3 basic gimmicks

    o Bombs (self explanatory)
o Mutagens (self-buffs, tho' this could(?) be expanded for DDO)
o Extracts (which are "spells in potion form" - so no Concentration roll???)

They are described as extremely flexible, able to be designed for offense, or defense, or support, or healing (not all at once, or at least not focused as such) - which reminds me of Bards, and so, for me, makes my skepti-sense tingle.

    We'll see...

Cordovan's reference is merely to acknowledge a tweeted question - "Alchemist? It's coming along, it sounds very cool!" - literally, just that much, then on to a diff topic.

What would be really interesting would be to gather different ingredients during a quest and then be able to combine them into something useful towards the completion of the quest. Think along the lines of Arena from Star Trek: TOS, where Kirk was able to fashion gunpowder from random deposits he found in order to create a projectile weapon.

The effectiveness or benefits of the mixture could be based upon the Alchemist's skill level.
"When asked if the developers hate the players, as they make so many challenging jumping puzzles, their response was that they have what they consider a “… normal amount of contempt for the players.” This is good. A dungeon master should always nurse a healthy contempt for his or her players."

I'm tentatively excited at the possible playstyle archetype. Agreed that "Alchemist" prima facie isnt very exciting, but it suggests mechanics that might be interesting and new

If I'm able to lob grenades like SLAs, splashing damage or CCs or debuffs, while buffing up and doing some limited self-heals, that could be a fun complement to DXBs, especially since it'll probably be an INT class so it will dovetail with Harper.

Also if the class is Poison based, as many of the source materials have it, that could herald a much-needed revisit of Poison damage in general.

So we will get to play a lobber like the Kobolds in just about every quest with Kobolds?

Sodium is a chemical element with the symbol Na and atomic number 11. It is a soft, silvery-white, highly reactive metal. Sodium is an alkali metal, being in group 1 of the periodic table, because it has a single electron in its outer shell, which it readily donates, creating a positively charged ion—the Na? cation.

Chlorine is a chemical element with the symbol Cl and atomic number 17. The second-lightest of the halogens, it appears between fluorine and bromine in the periodic table and its properties are mostly intermediate between them. Chlorine is a yellow-green gas at room temperature.

Taking two quite dangerous substances, we get:

Sodium chloride, commonly known as salt, is an ionic compound with the chemical formula NaCl, representing a 1:1 ratio of sodium and chloride ions. With molar masses of 22.99 and 35.45 g/mol respectively, 100 g of NaCl contains 39.34 g Na and 60.66 g Cl.

Next crafting system: Sodium for water bombs and chlorine for deadly gas combined together make table salt. Something to make your ham more tasty.

Now that is an interesting possibility and makes the idea of wider relevance...

Don't forget you can already make Alchemist bombs in the device workstations. There is also sun flasks, jolly roger bombs, vials of seafog, gloaming philter, and probably a few others I'm forgetting..

    Yesterday on Youtube:

I would guess with these conversations coming from D&D 5th ed, that this is more a push from WotC than anything inspired by Pathfinder.

Sorry Alchemist mentioned at 9:05 timestamp.

It's only because of reincarnation that the addition of a new class - something that should be strictly exciting and positive - can make some groan. I'm far from heroic completionist, or any completionist for that matter, but I have to agree that my first reaction was "ugh."

I know reincarnation / optimization isn't more important than the fun from playing. But an "ugh" is not a conscious, logical remark; it comes from the soul. And I've gone "ugh."

Don't get me wrong - this is exciting! But I value the input from my soul.

    Default Yes ? No ? ... Maybe Yes :D

    Alchemist a wizard INT subclass...
He enhance himself with potion and cast spell by potions use (potion he brew, infuse and cast as spell )... "Infuse" ... like the artificer
He learn new formulae for potion and inscribe them in a book ... like wizard and arti
He fight using bomb too ...like the rogue
He can disarm traps and open lock ... like rogue or arti again.
he wear light armor and has proficiency with basic weapons and hand crosbow .... Hand xbow ?!?
He has evasion near lvl 12-14 ...
So, we have a mix between rogue and artificer with better bomb and spell
I don't know where SSG is leading us with this but even if on paper it seems without interest, i'm waiting to see it, just for few things :
    - The handXbow (inquisitive was a first taste for this i think)
    - A better version of the arti Arcanotechnician (a full class for it)
    - A better version of rogue/wizard/arti with evasion and trapper without multiclassing
    - Maybe new spells, and i mean real new spells for this class and not spell mimic by potions
All of this, even with the lost of the runearm and the irondefender can be refreshing

    Edit : I forget to say 2 things :
    - that they chose a path (a kind of specialisation) with the same mechanic that deity choice for priest/fs/pal in DDO. Path wich add power/feat proper at themselves (bombing, poisoning, tank/heal...)
    - That they have spell tied to the divine sphere (beacon, heal, res...)

With a GOOD DM, an Alchemist class can be fun in PnP. With a non-invested DM, it's completely a non-class. That's PnP. (edit: I guess "kit" is the proper term for the later editions.)

Not sure what new thing it can bring to DDO that isn't already here, as mentioned above with rogue abilities and game items. Stuff that's been largely ignored by players for the most part as ineffective.

As a reformed altoholic myself, I find myself less-than-exuberant over the prospect of another class. I make a new thing (race/class) when it comes around, but then it just sits there in the waiting room as I go back to trying to make something worthwhile of my main. *sad shrug* Which sux cuz I do remember enjoying altoholism once upon an era.

That's my first impression/opinion. I hope I'm proven wrong when the class comes to fruition.
