Default This game seriously needs a name purge

It is absurd how many names are taken. The only other game I have seen with this issue is Path of Exile, and thats because the names are saved between all leagues, and people make nonstop new characters since the start of the game in 2013. It's to the point in that game where people just name themselves things like "FrostyTotes" or "FirePerson" because literally every name is taken. That's how this game is. I just don't understand how so many names are taken in a game that is this low pop.

If someone hasn't been on their character in 5+ years then the name should be freed up.

It's been an hour and a half and I have tried every variation of every decent sounding names. Many of which are so insanely obscure, some even made up by me. All taken. This is actually enough to make me not even continue with this game... I'm not going to play a Dungeons and Dragons game where I'm not even allowed a decent sounding name for my character.

Playing since the beginning. That site hasn't let me down yet. You may not always get the first name you want - but you can always find one that's often better.

There isn't a better name, than the one you want.

And you'll never get the name you want every time unless you play single-player games only. That's just life. Adapt or sulk, the choice is yours.

That isn't true, as there are other MMOs that will free up an inactive name. Never say never.

I'm pretty sure there are MMOs out there that use a player's account name as a surname, so you're literally wrong.

    Default Name Hack

Just wait for the next hardcore and select the name you want. With the free transfer move it to your home server. It will have a dash one or more at the end of it but will still be the name you want.

Alternatively DDO could place toons that have been inactive for more than 2 years in a holdings server to be transferred back to a live server if reactivated with a free name change if their name has been taken while inactive.

There's a good argument for that, but "2 years" is not nearly enough.

If someone is on military deployment, a term could be 4 years. If someone has a kid, it could be about that long as well before life begins to return "to normal". A college career is (typically) 4 years. Similarly with some medical situations. So, imo, certainly nothing less than that.

I'd say 5 years, as a good, round number for "Sorry, but you've been gone, really didn't expect to see you (ever) again". But even 10 would open up some great new (old) names. Something, anything.

I quit for 5 years and wouldn’t have wanted to lose a name I had for 10 years or more

why do we have recently so many players with lack of imagination?

is drizzt and legolas already taken? damm!

never had issues naming, here, wow, nor PoE

short answer, buy a +10 imagination potion and create something original, you can!

and no, you got 0 rights over someone who took the name 1st and stopped playing 5 or 20 years ago, if other games are willing to give under players pression it's their fault, not something to be proud of

16 toons, all original names, if you need anything we can give you a hand
psykopeta is finally baconpletionist because there isn't anything to delay it more - thelanis, where the gimps claim to be pros and noobs claim to be pros, no newbies allowed(unless they claim to be pros), we have enough drama w/o them. PS: I post only in the latest thread shown in main page, in the weird case u want something from me, feel free to send pm

When I'm feeling alt-y, I usually get the first name I drop in. (No I don't use acronyms on my chars like my forum handle is) Sometimes I do bump heads on a name I thought was oddball enough to be okay, but that just reminds me that I'm in the right house with a bunch of other nerdy geeky oddballs.

ANY name you try taking from any printed source will, of course, already have been trampled. Every conceivable variation of "Inigo" and "x/\xDrizzle'itx/\x" are long since locked up. Plus, if you read the fine print, copying names from copyrighted material is actually a naming violation, tho it isn't really enforced unless someone reports it.

As for other games that rip peoples' names away from them, there are also games that delete your character if you don't play them for a few months. So where does the line get drawn once ya start down that slope?

So, no. Current policy is right, and they have said they have 0 intention of changing that.

    -----------

As for the kickback against using a thesaurus above. Here's an example:

You want to use the word "purple" in your name. Popular color, of course it's long taken. But other words that can still MEAN purple are:

    CEO - Cupcake's Muskateers, Thelanis
    Collectibles

It gets even better if you read some the contexts it's used in. From a mushroom guide:

The stem is solid, violaceous at the thickened base, red-reticulated at the apex, expanded into the pileus

See? There's a character name right there - Violaceous Pileus.

There are many online name generators. All sorts of resources for names associated w/ D&D.

We all realize this game has it's limitations for us using certain names. Think about back when we had over a million people playing. ALL of those names used are still in the data banks (somewhere) and that coding is old as the names are. It's not so easy to go and release those names. And not fair (to a point) if those players come back looking for their toons.

I agree w/ Memnir on this. There are many ways to get names, and plenty of unclaimed ones out there. You might need to use a different spelling, but phonetically it would work.

Be creative! Let your kids pick a name, you mom, a co-worker whatever, if you're stuck.

Sure in a perfect world, you roll 20's all the time, and they are all crits.

    good luck

This game is actually the reason why my name is Azrielah or Azriel in literally every game I play, I being the edgy teenager when i started playing of course wanted the name Azrael, but I've come to just like this changed spelling and as I said have only found one game where the name was already taken. Plus Azrielah and Azriel works better for female toons anyway

Sorry I have namea on toons I've played since 2006... I should not have to give up those names because someone else is too unimaginative to come up with something original. Sorry you'll just have to tough it out.
