Amazing work, as always, from Matt and the crew. If you don't watch Matt, Laura and Travis on Critical Role, you should. #critters

    It was weak.

"Your hitpoints are permanently lowered by 21 points."

Really? No explanation of the actual effect? It's like they're playing some sort of made-up version of D&D.

I looked them up and Matt states that they value keeping the game running rather than getting bogged down in the number crunching so it's probably that.

But number crunching and bogging down the game by arguing about it is a cornerstone of mostly all (apparently) D&D games!

    If there's no bogging, it ain't D&D!

Only if the DM, and to a lesser extent the players, are pretty bad. In general it's best to make a judgement call and worry about the minutia later. For rules arguments anyways. Number crunching is largely trivialized by computers thankfully!

Also if you're looking for more great roleplaying to watch, RollPlay(Twitch) is fantastic. Adam Koebel (of Dungeon World fame) and Steven Lumpkin are fantastic GMs. Steven DMs West Marches which is a persistent world rotating casting D&D 5E game and also does R&D which takes a new game system with a semi-permanent cast and runs 8~ weeks of games in it. Adam runs Swan Song (Stars Without Numbers) and Mirrorshades (Shadowrun 1E). Really great cast for the games too, especially Mirrorshades.

He got hit with Necrotic Damage.. Some undead in 5E can/will lower you hitpoionts by the amount of damage that you took. So you take a hit for 15 HP you will be lowered by 15 etc..

You can get those back... but...

It's not Necrotic damage specifically that does it. It's caused by undead. It was meant to largely replace the cumbersome stat damage mechanic from previous editions.
