A couple of questions about the new TR system

I am a 18 sorc/2 pal/8 epic warforged with all EDs maxed. I want to TR into a 18 sorc/2 pal/8 epic bladeforged.

1) Do I need an Iconic True Heart or a Heroic True Heart? I've heard it both ways.
2) As a bladeforged starting at level 15, do I need to level from 15-20, or from level 15-28? Will I instantaneously gain the 8 epic levels when I hit level 20?
3) Will I lose any ED xp? I am assuming that all my maxed EDs will become available to me once I hit level 20, is this assumption correct?

1) Heroic True Heart. As a guide to the right heart, the type of Heart dictates the past life you will receive.

EDIT: But maybe hold out until you also pick up an epic True Heart to use first; that will put you back at 20 (after you level back up there with the xp you are auto-granted after using it), so you can immediately heroic TR.

2) 15 - 28. No you will not gain the 8 epic levels when you hit 20.

3) They will be available. No loss.

There is one piece of advice with which I am unclear, the part about using an Epic True Heart to put me at 20 first. What would be the advantage of doing that?

As I understand it, using an Epic True Heart will wipe out the XP I have accumulated in a single capped ED, and the reward will be one Epic Past Life associated with that ED (rewards as yet unspecified by the devs). So when I am leveling from 20-28, I might as well put the XP towards both epic levels and the ED which had its XP wiped out. So this would prevent "wasted" XP. Is this description correct? Or is there some other advantage?

You're understanding is wrong. You will lose your epic xp but you keep all your epic destiny xp. When releveling you would want to use destinies in whatever sphere you want your next epic past life to be (or is you don't care use whatever destiny you feel like)
