He was a game changer for sure.

It takes kahunas to hop in a tinfoil can with rockets strapped to it & fly to the moon.

Another one of my heroes passes on. At least HE (and, with any luck, the team that put him there) will be remembered for as long as humanity keeps historical records.

RIP, and thank you for the inspiration that set me on the path I took in this life (even though I never will make it to Mars like I intended to after watching him step off the Lander. Sigh.)

This is one guy that actually LIVED. Most people are content seeing the world. This guy was the first to visit the moon. He will continue to live on as an inspiration to others.

just heard something on the radio about neil

when he signed off from the moon to nasa one of the last things he said was "and good night Mrs.Smith where ever you are"

when asked by a reporter what it meant he explained that as a child he had a mean old neighbor lady a Mrs. Smith that used to keep any of the baseballs that flew into to her yard .

One day Neil knocked on her door to ask if he could have any of the baseballs she had picked up because they were out of balls .the old lady told him what? you want your balls back? when you are on the moon kid ,now get out of here

What writer alluded to the "life well-lived"?

Mr. Armstrong's life was certainly that and so much more. He was an inspiration to several generations and he will definitely be missed.

    RIP

I watched you set foot on the moon at my Grandmother's house. I was too young to realize the significance of what I saw. It is only in retrospect I understand what you left.

"HERE MEN FROM THE PLANET EARTH

FIRST SET FOOT UPON THE MOON
    JULY 1969, A. D.
WE CAME IN PEACE FOR ALL MANKIND"

    Godspeed, Mr. Armstrong.

Prayers for his family. Can't believe NBC's website said it was Astronaut Neil Young...

    75+ combat missions in Korea...wow.

    His family released this statement:

"For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."
And here's a great one from the man himself:

"I think we're going to the moon because it's in the nature of the human being to face challenges. It's by the nature of his deep inner soul... we're required to do these things just as salmon swim upstream."
Enjoy the great beyond, Mr. Armstrong.

No doubt that Mr. Young has 'traveled' extensively too, but I suspect he used a different kind of fuel to make the 'trip', if you know what I mean.

If you want to read what I'd consider to the THE definitive biography of Neil Armstrong, I recommend "First Man" by James R. Hansen. Armstrong was a shy and introverted person to begin with, and fame made him even more so, thus it was very rare that he opened up to anyone. Hansen managed to gain Armstrong's trust and cooperation in the writing of the book and had access to his (Armstrong's) archives. It's an exhausting but satisfying read.

Astronaut Neil Armstrong waves as he receives a hero's welcome in his hometown of Wapakoneta, Ohio.

Neil Armstrong steps into history July 20, 1969 by leaving the first human footprint on the surface of the moon.

"This is one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."

"It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small."

"I think we're going to the moon because it's in the nature of the human being to face challenges. It's by the nature of his deep inner soul... we're required to do these things just as salmon swim upstream."
