    Default Non DDO technical rant

    ra ra ra RRRRAAAAARRRRRRR

Ok, I posted this here because Im having PC problems but its not just DDO. Im not very technically minded only knowing what I have taught myself through running a pc for a few years. I have no technically minded friends and I dont go on alot of forums.... so.... Im going to burden you lot... because theres loads of geeky comp bods on here.... and i have a user name so i can post.... so there.

A few weeks ago I was having pc problems. I made a thread about it at the time but basically I replaced the PSU, the disk drive, the graphics card and the cooling unit (for a great big sub station looking beast)

Since then, on aload of occassions Ive been getting a blue screen and reset. often while playing DDO but also while doing other stuff. I done some google searches and read that it was probably because of a conflict between avast 6 and vista.... I had swapped to avast a few weeks before installing the new componants. I had been using AGV before buying the full avast pack. So, I swapped back to norton 360.

My PC is running like a sack of spanners. Its slow, lagging when just trying to load desk top stuff. freezing, crashing. crashing while loading. freazing while crashing (which is my personal favorite) .... its a right old mess.

I ran virus scans (which found, and fixed a trojan but scans since then are clean) Ive defraged, disc scanned. Yesterday I reformatted my hard drive, updated all my drivers, norton is up to date installed DDO, which at the moment is the only thing ive put back on my newly formatted HD except norton and the driver for my wireless connector. And still its running like ****.

im such a sad bunny. I cant afford to take it too the pc shop atm either, which is proper sucky..... Surely theres not much left to go wrong.... Hard drive failing?.... its working fine at the moment but i had to power down a min ago as it froze up while trying to log into windows.

Other then the hard drive, theres the mother board and the sound card.... but thats about it inside the case.... everything else is new and up to date with drivers...... I get proper frustrated with computers. Give me an engine ill strip it and rebuild it no bother..... why cant a computer just come up with a message

"X is wrong with your PC do Y and it will be fixed".... instead I get

"do you want to compose a very pretty but completely useless report which I might or might not send to microsoft but eitherway it will make sod all differance and you will have no idea of the outcome"

stoopid computers. Its a conspiricy I tells ya!

What version of Vista, and how much RAM do you have? If you have less than Vista 64 Ultimate and 4 GB of RAM, that is your problem.

DX Diag with the code brackets around it.

It sounds like OS corruption, but it could also be hardware. I had a lot of issues with my wifes laptop blue screening, even after a fresh install. Turned out I had bad ram that was causing a corrupt OS install (because HP uses images of an OS, instead of actually installing one from scratch). Of course, when I replaced that ram chip... the other one went bad... ah, good times.

    **EDIT
    To test your RAM:
    go to http://memtest86.com/
go to the free download section and choose an option.
I would run the test when you have free time. I ran it on my wifes laptop when I got home from work, and checked on it after eating dinner and watching a movie. It can take a while sometimes.

The problem is never how to get new, innovative thoughts into your mind, but how to get old ones out. Every mind is a building filled with archaic furniture. Clean out a corner of your mind and creativity will instantly fill it.

Click on the Start orb and type "dxdiag" in Start Search. Hit return and
    off you go.

AZ u sure the ram was bad sometimes when playing in the case dust can get into the ram socket n a simple take out ram n put it back in fixes that, just saying cause ram isn't as fragile as everyone thinks

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble. For being a proclaimed "non-technically minded" person, I'm rather impressed with the troubleshooting steps and replacements that you have already done.

When viruses or spyware are involved, usually reformatting (as you have done) is the quickest, and most guaranteed remedy. Blowing away and loading from scratch - like Ripley said - it's the only way to be sure.

I would not believe that a brand new hard drive is already failing (as you just replaced it), but I guess it's possible.

BSODs (Blue Screen of Deaths) are often caused by one of the following:

    * Corrupt driver files / limping or dying hard drive (common)
    * Hardware incompatibilities (rare-ish, at least from my experience)
    * RAM memory related issues / bad or dying memory DIMM (somewhat common)
    * System board or processor issues / chips or capacitors cooking or cooked (less common)

Based on everything you've tried, I would suggest that your problem is more than likely being caused by your RAM memory.

The good news is that if you have at least two DIMMs (two sticks of memory), you can often times identify the bad piece of memory quickly.

NOTE: Anytime you are working in your PC case, make sure that you are properly grounded by using an ESD strap, or by discharging yourself on the metal PC case (power supply must be plugged into the wall in order to discharge) or another metal surface.

If you have two DIMMs, remove one. Boot with the case open. See if you can make the computer crash. Note the results, and power down.

Next, remove the second DIMM, and replace it with the first one that you removed. Boot up. Try to make it crash. Note the results.

Keep in mind that you will also want to do these tests for the DIMM slots. It may not be the memory that is bad. It may be the DIMM slot, which will determine that your system board is bad.

    Hope that helps. Good luck!

ooo no idea. thats whats in the box. I didnt replace those.

I did have to remove them from the motherboard while fitting the cooling tower. just for ease of access.

Could removing and replacing them have damaged it a bit....? I dunno. can you lose half of one... ram card(?)... or is it a case that the whole thing would fail? I have 2 of them, I know that much.

also, do I have to buy a 64 bit os or can I get an upgrade from microsoft? its still vista yea?

I have been considering getting windows 7, but I cant afford much right now. maybe soon.

you forgot the / for the last "code" box. It should be /code. Also, you may want to check your audio drivers. They say they are from 2007. It might not be the issue, but I'm sure Realtek has issued new ones since then.
The problem is never how to get new, innovative thoughts into your mind, but how to get old ones out. Every mind is a building filled with archaic furniture. Clean out a corner of your mind and creativity will instantly fill it.

Computer problems can get pretty frustrating to fix.

Sometimes it's difficult to diagnose/isolate problems to hardware or software. If you've gone to the extent of using a new hard drive and a clean installation of Windows and relevant software (and kept it minimal such as just AV and Windows Updates) then I would lean towards hardware issues.

Blue screens will give an indication of the source of the problem (usually a driver.) Here is a link to Microsoft to help fix them -- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958233

I'd actually suggest she pull all devices from her machine other than the non essentials.

Then slowly, one at a time put them back in.

You don't need the cdrom/dvd (whichever one. disconnect it, power and data cable. I've had one go out that caused random havoc until it was disconnected.)

She said she had a sound card, but I'm wondering if she's running from the onboard. That is normally where I see Realteks. She may be causing a conflict there by accident

also, she has one or more x10 devices plugged in. Is she really controlling lights, rooms, etc.?

Ah ty. And good point on the audio drivers. Its funny because before the reformat yesterday there was an odd problem with my audio drivers. for...... a very long time, and time I went into control panel etc, click on sound and nothing would happen.... long story but I couldnt get into that section of the drivers from any angle....

however, I can now, so yea, ty, forgot about that.

    Came to post this.

Make sure you update the drivers for on-the-board hardware like that realtek audio device, etc. I never tried running vista 32 with DX10.

Computers have shipped with 3 GB of RAM. It does seem like an "odd" number. But 32-bit operating systems can't actually do anything with more than 3GB of RAM. If you have a system with 4 GB of RAM and you're running Vista or Windows 7 32-bit, there's an entire GB of RAM that your computer is unable to perfrom addressing for, and therefore cannot make use of.

When you try to browse files (right click My Computer, and select Open or Explore), does the system take longer than it used to to open? Or, perhaps, if you're sifting through My Documents?

If your hard drive is louder than usual, your hard drive may be failing. Though, running a chkdsk ought to identify any bad sectors. To run a chkdsk properly, go to a command prompt (Start --> Run --> cmd) and type the following:

    chkdsk /r /x

Answer YES that you want to perform the check at next reboot. Reboot, and let it go. It'll likely take a long time, but at the end, it should report whether or not you had bad sectors. If you don't see the report after it finishes, you can check your computer's event log (right click My Computer, Manage, and navigate to Event Viewer).

Anyway, a noisy, or recursive clicking in your hard drive means that it may be limping along and is about to die. If you have not replaced your hard drive as I thought that you had, this very well may be your problem.

shes actually a he just an incompetent and feeble one. I wouldnt want to insult women but being associated with them but.... okkkkk..... Im kinda with you on most of that, the last line has lost me though.

The sound card point you mentioned... sometimes, not very often, my sound HAS stopped working. When Ive been able to sort it (see my post about no access to sound card above) I have noticed that the other option is selevcted. I can choose "speakers" which its on now and working fine or "realtek digital output" but if I switch to realtek I actually get no sound back from anything.

you could try just taking the ram out and putting it back in sometimes they can be funny when u remove n replace em n can cuase problems

as for the OS its just that a 32 bit OS is getting old it cant handle more than 4g of ram and it doesnt use it all the well and prob why ur seeing "3070MB RAM" in your dxdiag unlike the "4096MB RAM" im seeing in my win7 64bit OS dxdiag

also what missing mind saying is good to try, taking out all non essential hardware n rebooting to see if all work fine and then adding one piece at a time (also reboot after each peice is added) till u hit a snag, can tell you what piece of hardware may be having issues

This is exceptionally good advice. The core of troubleshooting is isolating components, and identifying "known-good" components. If you independently add pieces back to your "known-good" bare bones kit, you'll know which piece is the problem when you boot up and see it all go south.
