I had the same dilemma. I am testing out Vanguard. Various forums suggest the pro's are pve and questing with an adult crowd, cons are low population and lack of development (that last one might actually be a positive for me after repeated nerfs to my most worked and geared toons). For ten bucks I bought the game and get 30 days to try it. Just finished installing so no word on the game itself yet.

Wondering if anyone will option the old Deadlands system for an MMO one day. Or at least the setting. I'd play that all day long.

Until then, DDO is about as good as it gets.

Imagine a hero, make a hero, become a hero.
This tells me it's going to suck.

Might I suggest Solitare or Mah Jong. There are many different versions to play. Neither are anywhere close to being like WOW. Easy to learn. I have never seen any changes made to either of these. Never have to worry about that bad pug group.

In other words IMO DDO is still the best. I have yet to play a MMO that did not suffer from changes.

DCUO has a similar combat style to DDO, along with small raids (in terms of people allowed in) compared to most games.

But being Sony, they don't talk much to the users, they seem to break more things than Turbine every patch, and content is really lacking at the moment. And their updates have been consistently running late.
Aside from all that it's a decent game. I ran out of content after two months though.

No release date, but it is 4E based, not really a MMO, and is done by Cryptic, all recipes for utter and abject failure.

What you mean with "not really a MMO"?

RL version 3.6 is by far the best alternative.

Getting away from the WoW mentality, in an MMO market where 80% of all games are WoW clones, and the ones which are not have failed harder than the ones that are.

I see people make the claim that this game resembles those games too much, until they see what up with the rest of the market.

This pretty much sums up DC Online.

When I first started playing it - I loved it. The ways in which you can customize your Hero/Villain in terms of appearance is really sweet. And, the powers have a fair degree of flaxibility when it comes to making builds. Picking a Mentor that is a DC comic icon (Superman, Joker, etc) is a great idea - and suits their storyline well.

But... the content runs dry after leveling a few characters to cap. The rate in which DCO makes all characters, regardless of build or Hero or Villain, run the same quests in the same order is stupid. In DDO, we tend to do that because doing that can be the fastest way to level. In DCU it's the only way to level. It gets real dull real fast. And the promise of monthly content upgrades has been dropped - and the content they've added is pretty 'meh'.

And the population of that game is fleeing in droves.

On the plus side - I loved the graphics, the powers, and the voice acting is utterly top-notch. Mark Hamill is the Joker - and he has some great dialog.

It's a fun diversion... but not one built to last.
