    Default Fantasy Books

Hello group my name is Jakarr and I like to read Fantasy novels.

*group says together with a monotone* Hi Jakarr

I'm either looking to make a list or find a list of fantasy novels. When it comes to books though I can be kinda picky which is why I'm here asking for some titles or authors.

So I'm looking for books that are kinda near the writing or type of story telling I normally read(though If its good I wouldn't mind hearing about it)

    -List O Books-

Anything and everything from R.A.Salvatore, yes Drizzt is overwrote but I have his other books like the Cleric Quintet and some of the newer series.

Again anything and everything from Terry Brooks, love how the new Shannara series is going.

Dragonlance along with all the side books including the ones about the twins.

    J. R. R. Tolkien, nuf said there I read em and reread em.

Harry Potter, sorry but I did enjoy the books they got alot better as they got older.

The Eragon Series, some co-workers told me it was a must read and I did enjoy the books.

Most of the books from the Forgotten Realms Series, Specially enjoyed the Elminster Series.

    Piers Anthony, Xanth Series.

A few of the Magic the Gathering Books, Specially loved the first book Arena read that book so much I wore out the cover and pages.

And other single books but either dont have em anymore or forget the names.

So slap me some new books titles, extra points if they are in a Series.

    How about:

George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. Start with "Game of Thrones" and go from there. There will be seven books in all. He just announced on his website that Book Five: "A Dance With Dragons" is finished. Yay!

Robin Hobb. Start with her "Assassin's Quest" trilogy, next read her "Liveship Traders" trilogy and then keep going into her third trilogy and so on...

Patrick Rothfuss. This guy is brand new. Read "The Name of the Wind" and follow that up with "The Wise Man's Fear" These first two in his trilogy are in the running for my all time favorites.

    R. Scott Bakker. Read his "Prince of Nothing" trilogy. He has a PhD in philosophy, I think, so his fantasy series goes very deep. Be warned. But I still have not read a scene in a book where wizards at war was described so well and so cool.

I have more in my head but the above offerings should keep you busy for months of reading time.

    Enjoy.

If you like Piers Anthony try out his Blue Adept series: Split Infinity, Juxtaposition and The Blue Adept. One of the best mixes of science fiction and fantasy out there.

Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber: Nine Princes in Amber, The Guns of Avalon, Sign of the Unicorn, The Hand of Oberon and The Courts of Chaos. There are five more, but they are a later series and not quite as good, but they are ok. You can buy the whole ten books in one volume (if they still sell it) called The Great Book of Amber.

T.H. White: The Once and Future King. Best King Arthur story out there.

Robert E. Howard, L. Sprague De Camp and Lin Carter: Conan, Conan of Cimmeria, Conan the Freebooter, Conan the Wanderer, Conan the Adventurer, Conan the Buccaneer, Conan the Warrior, Conan the Ursuper, Conan the Conquerer, Conan the Avenger, Conan of Aquilonia, Conan of the Isles. Most are short stories, but there are a few that are novels or novellas. They tend to repeat plots a bit, but they are so well written you don't care.

Fritz Leiber: His Nehwon series with Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser. Many books here so you might as well google this one.

If you like Urban Fantasy, I'd recommend the Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher. I also like Kim Harrison's Hollows, but that's rather far afield.

For pure Fantasy, I would recommend Lisa Shearin's series, starting with Magic Lost, Trouble Found.

I also like the Bahzell Saga by David Weber.

    Michelle Sagara's 'Cast In...' series.

And 'The Deed of Paksenarrion' by Elizabeth Moon.

Mind, I read a LOT more than that, but those are some of my favorites.

Try 'the curse of Chalion' by Lois Mcmaster Bujold. For the most part she writes really well and is probably my favorite fantasy author.

    @Pape

I have read the Riftwars though when I read them they didnt have that last book so will have to check it out.

    @SniptheShadow

The "Prince of Nothing" sounds interesting when I read I love to challenge my thinking and the way you talk about the author sounds like it would be a interesting read.

As for the rest I will check em out thanks for all the advance and keep it coming. I'm more into the High Fantasy sword and sorcery bit but I have been known to enjoy the books that take a modern dayer and force em into a fantasy world(Army of Darkness)

If you are willing to try sic fi fantasy then the latest Culture novel by Ian M Banks is out. If you wanted to start nearer the beginning I woul skip 'consider phlebus' and go with 'player of Games'

Brandon Sanderson is probably my current favorite.

    His Mistborn Trilogy:
    Mistborn
    The Well of Ascension
    The Hero of Ages

    Stand alone novels:
    Elantris
    Warbreaker

And he has taken over for the late Robert Jordan in the Wheel of Time Series. (And writes a better story than Mr. Jordan did since the first few books of the set, imho.)
    Leader of Lost Legions
    ~Sarlona~

I have tried Sci Fi before and just couldn't get into it, love watching Sci Fi shows and movies but I guess the books are just not my cup of tea.

suprised no one has mentioned Glen Cook yet, the Black Company series is one of the best sword and sorcery series i've ever read. his sci fi series are very good too, very low on the sci part, very high on the human, or other species, drama. his Darkwar trilogy is a fantastic blend of fantasy and mild sci fi.
Server: Sarlona. Characters: Rackoribs Barbequed, Brautwurst Flamegrilled, Porkloin Flameseared

    Yes to all of those.

Off the top of my head, there are two more series that jump out in my mind at the moment.
The Dark Tower series a.k.a the Gunslinger series by Stephen King.
I'm not normally a fan of King, but these were good. In fact, there were so many cross references from his other books that this series made me want to read some of his other stuff just so I could have the whole story, even though it wasn't necessary to understand the Dark Tower series.

The Coldfire Trilogy by C.S. Friedman. Black Sun Rising, Crown of Shadows, When True Night Falls.
These combine an interesting vision of magics and a duo of hero & anti-hero as protagonists into a tale that I've always loved.

Oh, and the Wheel of Time. Duh....

Yeah...I'm surprised that no one really keyed in on this one. It certainly has it's flaws, but it will always be near the top for best fantasy series.
