Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation,
Even in the dragon's mouth.

Then they finally came out with the floppy drive. I still have both.

Ah, Phantasie I, II & III.
Very limited incentory space. Everyone in your party of up to six members had only 9 inventory slots. 3-4 slots were already used up by armour shield and weapon (later on a ranged weapon too). "Quest items" too blocked inventory space, leaving less room for potions. Potions were not available in endless numbers so saving them for emergencies for important.
Overland travel was quite dangerous. Are you ambushed at night? Will you beg for mercy or try to flee? Do you have to fight? Is half your party asleep? If so, will you manage to wake up your party? Will your resources (magic points, hitpoints, potions) last long enough to get to a town or inn? Saving was only possibl in towns, so you had to play smart.
Trolls, Ogres, Lizard-men, etc. could join your party (mostly as fighters or thieves). Physically strong, but with a rather short lifespan.
The combat was rather simplistic. You could only assign general tasks to each of your party members (attack, parry, cast spell, use potion). The order of actions would then be determined randomly. Will the healing spell go through just in time? Do you have to conserve magic points? Do you have to use all your magic to overcome an ennemy? But if you waste too much resources will you survive the following fights?
While the old games lack a little on the story part they are still fun to play. At least you don't see exclamation marks on NPCs and have to find the little story/quests by yourself.
The "ultimate PvP experience".
One of the granddaddies of Hack&Slash gameplay and zerging.
One of the better martial arts games.

once the king of Pong. No one could beat me at it. I wonder if 50 years from now someone will say he was once one of the best players in DDO
